Press release provided by Department of Health and Human Services:

humboldt county department of health and human servicesThe Humboldt County Department of Health & Human Services (DHHS) and the Grocery Outlet will be teaming up to brighten the grocery shopping experience on Friday, May 1 with Fruit and Veggie Fest.

The annual, statewide event celebrates healthy eating at food retail locations during May. From 11 a.m. to 2 p.m., shoppers will be treated to cooking demonstrations and activities for the whole family that encourage making healthier choices in every aisle. The event focuses on the rainbow of colors, flavors and nutrition that fruits and vegetables offer.

Shoppers will be encouraged to fill their carts with plenty of fresh, frozen, dried and canned produce.

Fruits and vegetables add a beautiful array of color to any meal and those colors are important because it means a diet rich in vitamins and minerals that our bodies need to be healthy,” said DHHS Health Education Specialist Annie Grady. “Every trip to the grocery store is another chance to improve your family’s health by bringing home a rainbow of fruits and vegetables.”

Surveys show that retail promotions can have a positive impact on how shoppers spend their food dollars and CalFresh benefits. From corner stores to supermarket chains, retail partnerships and in-store activities like Fruit and Veggie Fest are critical in the battle against obesity, particularly among low-income Californians, who are at greater risk.

In-store healthy food and beverage demonstrations are a fun way we work with retailers to help shoppers create healthy habits like making half your plate fruits and vegetables, eating more whole grains and drinking more water every day,” Grady said.

Through the Grocery Outlet’s in-store activities, shoppers can sample nutritious and delicious recipes, ride the smoothie bike, plant vegetables, learn how to shop smart and receive free cooking tips and recipes.

The Grocery Outlet is located at 625 Commercial St. in Eureka. For more information, contact Annie Grady at 445-6044 or via email at [email protected].
