A fire started west of Leggett in northern Mendocino today. The blaze started about 8 a.m. as a permitted fire in a logging area. Work crews were burning slash piles when a wind whipped the fire out of control and up the hill into timber.

About 11:15 a.m., Leggett Volunteer Fire Department was dispatched to the fire. Piercy responded as well as Cal Fire and a con crew.

The blaze spread through 3.5 acres. No structures were threatened during the blaze. The logging crews helped fight the fire with their equipment and Cal Fire brought in a helicopter.

Crews got a line around it late this afternoon. Calfire and the loggers are currently on site.

Wow! It’s starts already. Gear up, it’s going to be another dry one. Clear the fuel around structures and along roadways, as well.

I’m sure they could have let it burn. Overnight moisture and the impending cold front would have taken care of it….

Naw, it’s getting late in the year for controlled burns like that, it’s pretty darned dry out there despite the little bit of late rain we’re getting. They did good putting it out.
Real good, IMAO.

You can’t see it in the photo but there are about a dozen homes just below the fire.

Looks like that area has been recently logged.
