Welcome–And Apologies for the Mess

creek

Here at Redheaded Blackbelt, I’m in transition from the Lost Coast Outpost. So, the blog is a bit of a mess. Leave comments below about what you do and don’t like about the new home but don’t worry too much. Things will be changing. I haven’t even decided if I’ll keep the name!  After all, I have more grey hair than red and I haven’t been a practicing black belt in years.

Some of you clever folks out there probably have a few ideas on names for me. Please share. There’s a lot to do and your help is appreciated. HumCinity is a name I’m tossing around–Humboldt, Mendocino, Trinity and the vicinity.

But that is heck of an ambitious chunk of country to cover. That would mean less focused coverage of Southern Humboldt where I am centered. Should I just focus on SoHum, northern Mendocino and west Trinity? Let me know what works for you.

Dear Kym Kemp,

I read a blog post this morning here (https://harmonyinthehills.wordpress.com/2012/08/06/78/#comments) and saw a comment by you that inspired me to write you today. Your comment read, “Thanks for this. You made me feel hopeful.”

“Hope… is the little voice you hear whisper ‘maybe’ when it seems the entire world is shouting ‘no’!”

There is so much hope left for this place, but you wouldn’t know it from checking Lost Coast’s news feed.

There are a lot of people working tirelessly right this very minute in order to bring to light all the good that is happening in this county within its famed industry, as the rest of the world marches forward and advances without its consent or perspective.

Unfortunately, with nothing but bad press to represent the people caught up in this fight, it seems every degree and shade of participant has been lumped into one, detrimental vision. Shadow life has kept good, honest people from coming forward to defend themselves, but not for long.

Did everyone at Lost Coast Outpost miss CCVH’s presentation to the board of supervisors? As a concerned citizen I was very disappointed to note that Lost Coast didn’t report on it in the slightest. In case you just missed it, here’s the link: http://humboldt.granicus.com/MediaPlayer.php?view_id=5&clip_id=915. Start playing it at 3:44:00. There is a full hour’s worth of presentation full of inspiring quotes and astounding figures. It may have happened nearly a week ago but I think it’s better to report it late than never.

I hope that your departure from Lost Coast spurs more coverage on these good times now that you’re back on your own turf.

The time is now for Humboldt County to decide its future. We must decide for ourselves, or have outside forces decide it for us.

Sincerely,
A Hopeful, Motivated, and Appreciative Citizen with Perspective

I definitely want to write about the hopeful as well as the problematic areas of Humboldt. I appreciate that CCVH’s presentation was very important and I’ll be trying to cover as much about the marijuana regulation situation as possible.

It’s Lostcoasts Outpost’s loss, but I’m happy you’re back to your own blog. I’d prefer SoHum, northern Mendo, and western Trinity as every other news source, including KMUD, covers more of the area.

Just making a suggestion that you keep the name. You’re hair might be greying, but once a redhead always a redhead, and blackbelt conveys more than just the physical activity. Your blog is an institution and there’s something to be said for continuity.

Eric is onto something with the continuity of the name. I’m really glad you’ve broken free from the Loco blokes who seem intent on spiraling our community into despair. I have yet to see much good news there (that wasn’t over your byline); they ignore anything which doesn’t fit their preconceived notions and agenda.

I’m sure gonna miss you at LOCO, you were the best thing about the place but I’m glad that you still have this site to feed our E-NooZ habits. :o)
I think I have a pretty good idea why you left too, that place was getting overrun by some pretty mean-spirited, nasty trolls, I don’t see how you were able to put up with it as long as you did.
Good luck on your new endeavor, name change or not (I like RHBB) I’m sure you’ll do well no matter what you decide.

I love the LoCO and will be a regular reader and I’m really going to miss Hank, Andrew and Ryan (as well as Shane, too.) But we had some different ideas. I’m restarting this blog to explore some of mine. We’ll see if you all love the ideas or hate them. Hopefully, you’ll find room for both blogs in your day.

It would be great to get some coverage in Western Trinity… we are in an info void out here. If I had the time I’d start some trinity coverage, but there happens to be only 24 hours in a day.

Good luck on your new/revisited ventures.

I’ve always followed RHBB simultaneously with LoCO just to make sure I didn’t miss your stories that didn’t cross post on LoCO, so I’m not giving up anything by this change—I’m getting more of what I like best.

Best of all I will enjoy seeing comments moderated more closely. The Thunderdome/Country Club format Hank created has not worked for me, nor has the tolerance for trolls, if anything it got worse. The Country Club is more civilized, but often important comments and discussion are over in the Dome, so trying to comment in the Dome is like being at a family gathering and having an adult conversation constantly interrupted by the kid’s fighting and crying.

The mess of the blog layout today is okay, I know it will only get better as you have time to settle in.

I look forward to being here.

Hi Kym,

I say keep the name.
Please, Please , please report on North Mendocino, as I looked desperately for news on the fire last summer here on Wilderness Lodge Rd you were the only and best resource I could find. And I’ve followed your posts ever since. Willits News, Ukiah press etc. were pitiful! You and Cal Fire and Broadcastifly were my lifesavers as I watch the fire trucks pass my house on the only road in and out.
Now I check your site first thing every morning and find news I can’t get anywhere else!
Thanks Kym you’re a treasure and so are the folks who post or most of them anyway.

Hey Kym,

I love that you’re coming back to RHBB like this, full time. Already the topics at the head of your blog are hinting at how you’ll be spending your soulful, talented time, and the positivity and variety are great. SO glad you won’t have to moderate the trolls when they show up on LoCO anymore. How could that have been any fun for you??

What you’re doing is really inspiring to me. Thanks for that. And I personally love “Redheaded Blackbelt.” It means a lot more than hair color and regular martial arts practice. To me it signifies your strong female warrior spirit.

May you always find the words.
