Southern Humboldt Rural School Seeks Right Teacher

Salmon Creek Community School press release:

Our tiny (17 students), independent and parent-supported K-8 school is seeking a uniquely skilled teacher to join our off-grid community. The right candidate will be self-motivated and autonomous; there is no faculty beyond the core staff of three (we have several guest teachers throughout the week). Must be comfortable with rustic conditions (wood stoves, composting toilets, dirt road, solar power) and an eclectic community.

We are not a Waldorf school, but value many of their same qualities: experiential learning, ample outdoor time, integration of the arts and development of the whole child. Most of our recent 8th graders have gone directly on to the early-college preparatory high school in the county. Our reputation is such that families are now driving over half an hour “up the mountain” to send their kids here.

We are hoping to replace our long-time upper grades teacher with someone who can maintain that status. The independence is priceless (and the view is spectacular!). Our 145 day school year is 20 percent shorter than public schools, and scheduling is flexible. Salary $35,000 to $38,000 for a teacher who will fit our needs.

The school specializes in small classroom sizes and individual attention to its students. See Website here.

If you think you are the right person for the hands on, academically rigorous, student centered classrooms, please send resume and three letters of reference to [email protected]  Application deadline April 3.

Inquiries about student placement are also being accepted. (The school is particularly seeking 4th grade girls this year as there is only one now.) Scholarships are available.
