Fire Reported Last Night at Mattole Beach Still Burns

Cal Fire Press Release:

At approximately 7:30 p.m. on May 26, 2014 a fire in driftwood was reported in the Mattole Beach area. The Petrolia Fire Department and CAL FIRE responded with fire engines and handcrews from High Rock Conservation Camp. The fire burned a little less than three acres in driftwood and grass before being contained early this morning.

Three CAL FIRE engines and two crews, along with units from Petrolia Fire and water tenders from Honeydew and Rio Dell Fire Departments are currently working on the fire. Difficult access and deep seated fuels have made for heavy mop-up operations and significant equipment commitment. The cause of the fire has not been determined.

CAL FIRE asks the public to be vigilant when burning debris or enjoying a campfire. Follow burn permit regulations, make sure fires are extinguished and out cold, and do not burn during windy or gusty conditions.
