Garberville Man [Now Updated to Myers Flat Man] Arrested for a 2011 Attempted Murder in Riverside

UPDATE, 9:19 a.m.: The Humboldt County Sheriff’s Office has weighed in with their own press release and added mugshot -AG: 

On 1-12-2014, at approximately 8:15 a.m., a Humboldt County Sheriff’s Office Deputy spotted a dark green Toyota Landcruiser driving out of the Humboldt House Inn  parking lot in Garberville. The deputy had received briefing information from the United States Marshalls Office and Riverside County Sheriff’s Office that the driver of the vehicle, William Oliver Sumpter Jr., 28 years old from Myers Flat, was wanted for attempted murder. The deputy stopped the  Landcruiser on Locust Street, near Maple Lane, Garberville.  The California Highway Patrol responded and assisted with the traffic stop.  The deputy confirmed the driver was Sumpter and arrested him without incident on the outstanding felony arrest warrant which was for attempted murder and intimidation of a witness. The bail issued on the warrant was for one million dollars. Sumpter was transported to the Humboldt County Correctional Facility where he is being held awaiting transport to Riverside County.

Original post: A Garberville man was arrested Sunday morning in the same town for a crime committed in 2011. William Oliver Sumpter, Jr. 28 of Garberville was arrested after a traffic stop near Locust Street and Maple Lane. Charges stem from a 2011 crime in which a victim was shot four times and now is confined to a wheelchair.

Bail has been set at $1,000,000.

LoCO has questions in to the Riverside Sheriff about the original crime.

On December 16, 2013, investigators from the Palm Desert Station Investigations Bureau obtained a Warrant of Arrest, issued by the Superior Court of California, County of Riverside, charging William Oliver Sumpter Jr., 28, of Garberville, with one count of 664/187PC Attempt Murder and 136.1PC Intimidation of Witnesses/Victims. Bail on the case was affixed at $1,000,000.00. The case stemmed from a 2011 investigation in which the victim was shot four times and is now paralyzed from the chest down and is confined to a wheel chair.

The Palm Desert Station investigators requested the Fugitive Warrant Enforcement Team (FWET), which is a part of the US Marshals Pacific Southwest Regional Task Force, assist with the investigation. A collaborative effort by investigators, members of the Palm Desert Station S.E.T. team and FWET resulted in the confirmation that Sumpter was currently in the Garberville area (Humbolt County).

Sumpter was located by Humbolt County deputies during a traffic enforcement stop and taken into custody. Sumpter was booked into the Humbolt County Jail reference his active Riverside County felony warrant.
