Snow Predicted Today–Roads Icy–Be Careful

Cold weather impacts pipes and roads across the North Coast.

Snow is currently falling in Fortuna according the police department there. They suggest allowing extra time to get to your destination. (Send your snow photos in to [email protected] or upload them onto our Facebook page)

Fortuna is not the only place with weather conditions that indicate possible dangerous driving conditions. The CHP dispatch reports multiple accounts of ice on the Klamath Bridge. 

Also ice is being reported on the Rio Dell bridge. There is a solo vehicle spin out.

The US National Weather Service has offered a wonderful tool to plan your travels today especially if you are going through mountain passes.  Go to this page here. Follow the directions on the graph below.

Remember the snow today creates one set of problems but the patchy freezing fog predicted for much of Saturday and Sunday mornings also creates treacherous conditions.  Be safe out there!

UPDATED 9 A.M. with Humboldt Co. Sheriff Public Service Announcement:

With low snow levels forecasted, the Humboldt County Sheriff’s Office and property owners would like to remind snow seekers not to trespass on private property. The Kneeland-Greenwood Heights area is primarily all private property. Trespassing is a crime and trespassers could be subject to citation or arrest. 

Snow seekers should utilize the Horse Mountain, Six Rivers National Forest areas for recreational activity. If you do plan to recreate in the snow, please notify family and friends of where you are going and bring appropriate safety equipment in case you become lost, injured or stuck. Make sure your cell phone is charged if you bring one with you and have appropriate winter clothing.
