15 [Now 17] Fires in Hoopa Area [Now Out] –UPDATED

UPDATE 9:30 P.M.: Duffy Mott, dispatcher for Hoopa Emergency Services, described a hectic scene as Tribal Fire was forced to call in three Forest Service engines for support as multiple fires burned in the Hoopa area throughout the day. Mott explained that all the fires were believed to be arson though they are under investigation. CHP provided traffic control during the incidents. Mott says the fires are all out at this time.

Below are the fires in the order they were reported.

Called in at 6:35 A.M. on River Rd. approximately 1/10th acre burnt.

Called in at 6:52 A.M. on Tish Tang Rd. approximately 1/2 acre burnt.

Called in at 7:28 A.M. on Community Services Rd (Near Tish Tang Rd.) approximately 1/10th acre burnt.

Called in at 12:35 P.M. on Hwy 96  Mile Marker 16.97 approximately 1/10th acre burnt.

Called in at 12:35 P.M. on Hwy 96  Mile Marker 17.44 approximately 3/4th acre burnt.

Called in at 12:35 P.M. on Hwy 96  Mile Marker 18 approximately 1/10th acre burnt.

Called in at 12:35 P.M. on Hwy 96  Mile Marker 18.89 approximately 1/4th acre burnt.

Called in at 12:35 P.M. on Hwy 96  Mile Marker 19.10 approximately 1/10th acre burnt.

Called in at 12:35 P.M. on Hwy 96  Mile Marker 19.50 approximately 1/10th acre burnt.

Called in at 12:35 P.M. on Hwy 96  Mile Marker 19.80 approximately 1/10th acre burnt.

Called in at 12:35 P.M. on Hwy 96  Mile Marker 20.51 approximately 1/4th acre burnt.

Called in at 12:35 P.M. on Hwy 96  Mile Marker 20.91 approximately 1/4th acre burnt.

Called in at 12:35 P.M. on Hwy 96  Mile Marker 21.20 approximately 1 acre burnt.

Called in at 12:35 P.M. on Hwy 96  Mile Marker 21.28 approximately 1/10th acre burnt.

Called in at 1:20 P.M. on Masten Flat (off Pine Creek Rd.) approximately 1/4th acre burnt.

Called in at 1:20 P.M. on Masten Flat (off Pine Creek Rd.) approximately 1/10th acre burnt (different location.)

Called in at 5:08 P.M. off Tish Tang Rd. approximately 1/2 acre burnt.

Approximately 5 1/4 acres total burnt.

CHP is reporting that Hwy 96 has one way controlled traffic because of fires in the area. (See below for a rough idea where the fires might be–these are the gps coordinates for the controlled traffic but from past experience LoCO has seen that these are not always accurate.)

Hoopa Tribal was able to respond to questions with the information that there were 15 fires in the area but said that they “can’t really talk about it right now” because they were too busy dealing with the situation.

LoCO will update as soon as more information becomes available.
