UPDATE 12:44 P.M.: CHP Report-

On Wednesday, March 20, 2013, 40 year old John Carlos Vau of Willits, CA, was driving westbound SR-162 at mile post marker 0.2.  Vau was driving a 1997 Volvo garbage truck owned by Solid Waste of Willits when he lost control of the truck and it struck a utility pole.  Phone and cable lines fell from the pole in three locations, across the roadway.  Vau was uninjured in the collision and no power lines fell to the ground.  Alcohol and or drug impairment is not believed to be a factor in this collision.  No hazardous materials were released from the garbage truck.  Cal Trans, PG&E, Verizon and other agencies are working hard to get the road open as soon as it is safe, and estimate the road will be closed through 5:00 PM tonight.  Alternate routes to the Covelo area are Dos Rios Rd. from the west and Mendocino Pass from the east.  Motorists are reminded that wet weather conditions and recent storms may make these alternate routes inaccessible to some vehicles and commercial vehicles should not attempt these roads.
The California Highway Patrol urges motorists to use caution and reduce their speed during wet weather driving conditions.

UPDATE 12:15: The CHP is still reporting that the road isn’t open and now the Mendocino Co. Sheriff is reporting that a landslide has blocked the nearby Dos Rios Rd. Only 4wheel drive vehicles can use the road currently.

UPDATE: CHP dispatch is reporting the road won’t be open until around 10 A.M.
