The Emerald Cup 2011

In spite of briefly considering closing their doors due to increased federal enforcement, the Emerald Cup is back on track—-with a great big gorgeous poster.  If you want to enter, you must submit two ounces by November 30th.  I’d love to follow the process of someone entering either anonymously or not.  If you are interested, contact me at mskymkemp@ gmail.com.

If you haven’t been before, you should consider going at least once.  What an experience!

Do you trust the honesty of this operation? My opinion is that it’s all about marketing. Because even though non-winning available strains have been judged, through personal experience, by me and others to be superior, I’ve found that many buyers demand the inferior strains anyway. Because even knowing they aren’t as good, they can sell them easier because the “winning entries” become popular and demanded by the duped users. The winning entries become big sellers. That adds up to an enormous amount of pounds and dollars. In my view this emerald cup competition is just free false advertisement for the strain that they want to promote and sell. This is BS.

Still, I hope you will be able to follow a contestant through the process, that would be good journalism. With no doubt some excellent photos of local color. But no matter the info you receive and witness, (are fed — no pun) I will most likely continue to be highly skeptical based on up to date personal experience.

Anne, you were a judge for the Emerald Cup? If you were, and had that experience then that is news and I would like to interview you. I did interview Hawaii Dave (Cup 2009) who, to the best of my knowledge, prior to winning was not affiliated in any way with the Emerald Cup and he won. And the folk who won last year were signed up by the co-op after they won according to statements made at the time. The Cup folk sure put a lot of work into this to just give it to someone predetermined. I’ve attended a judges’ meetingsand seen the scorecard that gets filled out. Of course, those could be faked but I believed them to be authentic.

Kym, I never said I had anything to do with the emerald cup. I meant that I have had access to the same strains that were in their competitions. And myself and others have “unofficially” judged their winners and losers, as well as strains that weren’t entered. We made judgements about their judgements. By our determination their winners were not the best pot. It’s only one personal antidote but it most definitely was able to convince me of the inaccuracy of their ratings. Anyway, it should be obvious that if a greedy grower(s) has an abundance of one kind or the other, (some kinds produce more per plant, per sq. ft. etc.) and is able to put some influance on the market, they will want thier kind to be promoted as being the “winner”.

I can determine when a winning strain is inferior to another strain. Can’t you? The best strain I’ve smoked has never been in any competition. Friends and acquaintances, long time experienced smokers, agree with me that it is superior to any of the now popular contest winning strains. It’s name is an old well kept secret. It’s a kept a secret so that it won’t be commercialized, which can mean being misnamed, ill bred, crossed, contaminated, and mishandled in every way that will ensure more money for the outlet, and unfortunately a dilution of identity for the good stuff. So we keep it to ourselves. In the meantime millions of dollars continue being manipulated by competitions like the Ecup. To assume its an up and up operation is naive.

Bottom line is that 2nd rate pot is being demanded by the users because of propaganda put out by producers who favor quantity of money over quality of herb.

Well aside from THC content, CBD content, or some other attribute that is measurable, all the rest of it — taste, aroma, appearance, etc. — is really pretty subjective, isn’t it?

Fiance here: A name is just a name. I never judge by name! Way back in the day (80’s) a friend of mine had a 1/4 lb. A guy came to buy it and asked “what is was”. She told him “pot”. He refused to buy it for $175 because it wasn’t good enough. We sat around and made up a name for it “Teretian Violet”. A week later she sold it to the same guy for $250 because it had a cool name.

When buyers come by and say, is this headband? whats that, bluedream? whats this dank stuff? He says choose whatever you want. When they continue, whats this lime strain, green crack? what this called, wow look at the crystal, waht about this, whats that, whats the purple called? and so forth… his answer, you tell me. 🙂
