I’ve never heard of them before, but I’ve got some great pics of one of these I found in my veggie garden this year in Washington state. Ours never emitted any kind of stinky gas, and he’s super cute, but I don’t think my plants loved it as much as I did 🙂

Looking around at the pictures on http://www.butterfliesandmoths.org, it looks like it might be a Western Tiger Swallowtail, aka Papilio rutulus…though it resembles other species there too.

I’ve heard those things, whatever they are, are extremely poisonous and attack without provocation, so be very careful.

O6em is correct… Western Tiger Swallowtail (Papilio rurulus) feeds on willow and alder.

It also may be the Pale Tiger Swallowtail we see in early summer… Papilio eurymedon.

I took a photo of one close up and it’s butt (which appeared to be the end with colors) got swollen and reared up in a threatening pose. It didn’t spray me but it did eat my dog later in the day.
