Bassler Dead? One Newspaper Says Yes

The Fort Bragg Advocate is reporting that Mendocino Sheriff Tom Allman and the US Marshals are holding a joint news conference tonight at 6pm. The Press Democrat which has consistently had the scoop on Aaron Bassler information is reporting that

Aaron Bassler, wanted in two North Coast slayings, was shot and killed in the woods outside Fort Bragg on Saturday, according to law enforcement sources.

The circumstances of his death were still unclear Saturday afternoon, but a deputy with the Sacramento Sheriff’s Department said a colleague from his agency was involved in the shooting, which occurred around mid-day.

“He is deceased,” Deputy Ron Parsons said.

No one else was injured, he said.

UPDATE: According to report from Rick Tatum, “Residents in the Noyo Basin have also received a reverse 911 that the area is secure.”

UPDATE 7:23:  Mendo Sheriff Confirms Bassler’s death and gives details.

I can’t imagine how frightened people in that wide swath between Ft. Bragg and Willits have been.

What a painful true story. Two men allegedly lost their lives at the hands of a very mentally disturbed young man, that is now also dead. No one can really feel good about any of this. Relieved perhaps, but each one of these men meant allot to their loved ones. My condolences to all involved. May you each find the peace that you need as the time goes by.

Your comment is the most intelligent and compassionate statement yet made concerning this horribly tragic incident. I am so gratified that you and others ( e.g. Karen Lawson) have taken this approach.

I t appears if you are thirtysomething male, need mental help and named AAron in Fort Bragg nothing will be done till yo go off the deep end. It makes me sad we have
money for war and none to save lives. I am in no way condoning murder and
appreciate law enforcements action. There just has to be a better way……………
Sad for the unnecessary dead……..

It’s about time, I’d shoot him in the head just to make sure then I’d hang the body for the bears.

Adding my thanks to M.E. May all involved find a measure of peace and comfort, and may we all reach the “better way” Anne on a Mouse cites, which is indeed love.

The whole story is very sad, There was not feeling of relief when the man hunt ended. My heart goes out to Aaron’s family who tried for a very long time to intervene. My heart goes out to Jere and Mathews, family and friends.
My hope is that mental health & drug programs-which were terminated during Reaganomics in the late 70’s and early 80’s- will be reinstated as a social need.
I also commend the different branches of law that took every effort to find Aaron alive.
Let’s start healing our communities.

There is enough sadness to go around. I’m just glad that more people weren’t hurt. It was a very volatile situation.
