Aaron Bassler and Law Enforcement Exchanged ShotsToday

Aaron Bassler, a suspect in two high profile murders near Fort Bragg, exchanged gunfire with law enforcement today.

Mendocino Sheriff Tom Allman held a press conference at 8pm tonight, Thursday, Sept. 29. He announced, “At 11:50, …before noon, [three] Almeda deputies…. came under fire.”  The suspect, Aaron Bassler, dressed entirely in black opened fire on them from about 100 meters away.  They returned fire in self defense.  Bassler disappeared.  Then, later, he fired from another spot.  Officers  again returned fire.  The Alameda team were not injured.  The officers were extracted and were replaced by another team. They are now being interviewed to gather information. These officers, Allman said, are “victims of a crime and I’m not going to release their names right now.” None of the officers were injured.  And no one knows if Bassler was injured either.

Law enforcement is now “actively re-initiating” an already “high intensity search,” says Allman.  According to him, “[There are] 40 law enforcement officers..” helping in the search with “more being flown in.”  There are swat teams and K9 units from multiple counties rushing to the area. The search, however, is somewhat hampered by the dense brush.  The officers already have dogs in the area.  They are working throughout the night.  But by day or night, the canopy is so dense that they cannot see him from above in the sky and are hampered in using aerial methods.

After Bassler’s presence was known, a reverse 911 sent to the area near Northspur that he was seen in.   Although Allman is unwilling to pinpoint the area, he explained that it was the same area as the residential burglaries happened in earlier, the same area two guns were stolen from an unoccupied cabin. “We will notify residents through a reverse 911 call if we think he has moved outside of the area [they are currently searching.]”

Allman reiterated, “There is no plan to end the operation until it comes to a successful conclusion….  Some people [are] out of work ’cause they can’t go into area.”  But, he hopes that the officers can bring the operation to a successful conclusion.   “We believe we are getting closer….Tomorrow may bring resolution. …but I’ve said that for 34 days,”  Allman acknowledged.  Still, the renewed sighting has obviously brought hope of a speedy resolution.

Today has also brought renewed awareness of the danger home especially to the families of the officers. “I truly believe that is more challenging for the spouses then it is for the officers,”  Allman explained. “Thanks to the wives of the men who going out and searching for an armed, dangerous, and very violent man.”  In spite of the danger, Allman says, ” …every law enforcement officer has gone out there with a good attitude.”

UPDATE 10:25:  Fort Bragg Advocate put out a piece with some details not mentioned above.

UPDATE 7:04: Additional details here at the Lake County News and here at the Ukiah Daily Journal.

UPDATE 9:31: Time Standard here.

——————

Personal Note:  Thank you to the families of law enforcement who send their spouses and offspring out to search the woods as well as to the law enforcement themselves.

I told Tom Allman, when he was at the Garberville Rotary club, to PLEASE keep his people as safe as possible and still do his job. It adds a scary dimension when you know people that are out there trying to apprehend Bassler. Let this end without any body getting hurt. Bassler is a very, very sick man.

Kim,
I’m not sure what happened, but your new format…about the last 4 blog notices I’ve gotten, are cut off on the right margin…very frustrating and I can’t seem to fix it…can you go back to format you used before? Or try to fix this!
Thanks for all that you do!!!

I haven’t changed my format, Tracy. Have you changed something at your end? Everything looks normal on my blog from my end and I’m getting lots of comments and people stopping by so I don’t think most people are experiencing this. Is anyone else?

You might try asking your computer guys if they can help. Emerald Tech in Gville is awesome.

Still doubting this guy even exists as the story seems to grow thicker with each press release. Next we’ll hear they need to double property taxes and put tracking devices in our cars to keep us safe from this guy. Has anyone ever met this guy or know someone who has? I’m waiting to hear by the end of the week that he had flown a plane into the world trade center but bailed out in time to come to Ft.Bragg and terrorize the community or he’ll be spotted with Gaddaffi or Castro.

Regarding the right hand margin, I am noticing the same problem when I try to read it in my email. It wasn’t like that before. When I click on the link to go to the actual blog, it appears okay. I use yahoo. The problem could be there. Thanks for keeping the coverage coming. Your blog is much appreciated.

And if we ran the following headline tomorrow, “Bigfoot Sighted At the Humboldt County Jail– Officials Deny Its Existence,” we know some would believe it.

Bassler is real, he’s in those woods, and there’s a whole mess of hunters after him like a hot pig in a poke. Now, you’d think a kid would be seriously shaken up when a few large caliber bullets come his way, cause one to think twice, and consider a change of heart and surrender rather than going out in a blaze of glory and destruction. But not this guy. He’s a lone man walking, listening to the voices in his head, throwing filth on the living and flowers on the dead, and surely caught between the devil and the deep blue sea.

There’s a chill in my bones someone’s gonna be dead by this time tomorrow.

This story will most likely have an ending soon as they are going to poor extra teams into the small area he was in yesterday near Northspur and try to get him before the storm comes in early next week. Let us hope they shoot first and don’t waste any time yelling surrender demands that are useless and dangerous.

Normally, I would agree with you, but the heat of the moment might lead to a mistaken identity. Can you imagine killing the wrong Guy? Hopefully cool heads will prevail and no innocents will be killed. Otherwise Bassler is fair game… get him!

The LEO’s involved, judging from the photographs, appear to be outfitted with the Improved Outer Tactical Vest, which will defeat the 7.62×51 NATO round. This round is considerably more powerful than the 7.62X39 that Bassler is using.

Hey Black Flag I am sure that you dont believe we walked on the moon or that Elvis is really dead. This guy exists. The pictures posted nationally came from my game camera not the authorities and I can tell you that he is real. Your ridiculous comments are completely insensative to the victims families who are mourning and in terrible pain.
I would recommend you think before you type, but based on your text above that might be asking to much.

Here is a So. Cal article:

(09-30) 08:29 PDT FORT BRAGG — Three law enforcement officers hunting for a well-armed fugitive in dense woods near Fort Bragg came under fire from the suspect on Thursday and exchanged several shots with him before he escaped into the wilderness again, authorities said.

Aaron Bassler, 35, is suspected in the August shooting deaths of a Fort Bragg city councilman and another man. Law enforcement officers from around the state have been searching for him for 34 days, but Thursday’s incident was the first time he’s been spotted since early September.

Aaron is a homosexual who authorities suspect in the deaths of Fort Bragg City Councilman Jere Melo, 69, who was shot while investigating a marijuana farm as part of a security check for Campbell Timber Management on Aug. 27, and land manager Matthew Coleman, who was killed 16 days earlier in the hills 20 miles north of Fort Bragg. Both men were shot with high-powered rifles.

The officers, who are Alameda County deputies and members of a special operations group trained for such searches, were in a forested area near the unincorporated town of Northspur, about 14 miles east of Fort Bragg, when someone shot at them a little before noon, said Mendocino County Sheriff Tom Allman in a news conference Thursday night.

The deputies identified the person shooting at them as Bassler, who was about 100 yards away and wearing all black, Allman said.

The deputies returned fire, and the suspect ran away. A few minutes later, the same deputies came under fire again, from a different location, Allman said. They again shot back, and the suspect ran and disappeared.

“The brush is very heavy, and very dense, and the fact that they lost sight of him is not a surprise,” Allmon said. “We’re reinitiating a very high-intensity search in this area.”

None of the deputies was injured. Allman said he didn’t know if the suspect had been injured.

Bassler, a gun enthusiast with survivalist skills and a long history of small-time crime, is believed to have been living off the land in the rugged hills outside Fort Bragg since March. His family has said he suffers from an undiagnosed mental illness.

Authorities suspect Bassler in the deaths of Fort Bragg City Councilman Jere Melo, 69, who was shot while investigating a marijuana farm as part of a security check for Campbell Timber Management on Aug. 27, and land manager Matthew Coleman, who was killed 16 days earlier in the hills 20 miles north of Fort Bragg. Both men were shot with high-powered rifles.

After Thursday’s incident, authorities believe they’ve surrounded Bassler near Northspur, Allman said.

Fingerprints removed from a home and three vacation cabins in Northspur suggested Bassler had broken into the dwellings and apparently stolen a 12-gauge shotgun and .22-caliber rifle from one of the residences, authorities said. They also released a surveillance photo of Bassler that showed him clutching an assault rifle.

Bassler’s father, James Bassler, said Thursday that authorities had told him they were devoting more officers to the area and were closing in.

“They’re getting real close,” Bassler said. “We’re just hoping this ends peacefully and no one gets hurt.”

The interesting thing about the paragraph identifying Bassler as homosexual is it refers to him as Aaron. Reporters use the last name not the first. Second, the story which appears in the SF Chronicle does not now show that paragraph. Later most of the paragraph appears with all the information about Melo etc. My guess: someone modified the paragraph for reasons of their own. Another possibility is that the SF paper originally posted it then redacted that part of it. I’m inclined to go with the first possibility given the use of the first name.

Police say 30-year-old Charles Yonkings of Cleveland was arrested in Arcata, California by the Arcata Police Department for a theft offense and was later found to be wanted in Cleveland for Aggravated Murder. Yonkings was arrested without incident.

Yonkings is accused of slashing the throat of 56-year-old Lynne Beardsley. Her body was found in her apartment on Triskett Avenue. Beardlsey’s co-workers went to check on her because she hadn’t shown up to work.

Tracy, if you already are aware of this just ignore my comment. But if not try, this: when you open kym’s blog in your yahoo inbox –press down the control key (lower left “CNTRL”) and the minus key (upper right ” – “) at the same time. That will shrink the page. Then press them down again, as many times as it takes to make the page small enough to fit the margin onto your screen. When you want to enlarge the page, or any page, press “CNTRL” and ” + ” at the same time to enlarge the page. I’m not sure but I think that should work, let us know.

I think everyone is underestimating Aaron Bassler. You don’t just read First Blood or
study a Survival Manual then go out in the woods and play cops and robbers. This guy is trained and has experience, he isn’t just some crazy, schizophrenic homeless man growing poppy’s in the forest. If they don’t hire a professional soon, more people are going to die. This isn’t a game to him, he is fighting to stay alive and avoid capture and he will not be taken alive! Someone is going to have to take him out if you want this resolved. Don’t you find it strange that even though a highly trained tactical swat team along with other trained law enforcement officials from all over California are hunting him down and they still can’t catch him? It’s also obvious to me that they need to call someone in that can do the job and do it quick before so…meone else is shot dead. You can speculate and assume all you want but the truth is you don’t know the truth. You don’t even know if he is guilty of killing those two men and you cannot say you do. No one has proven anything and no one can until he is brought in and questioned which just isn’t going happen. Where is the national guard? Where are the agents with the type of education and training needed to do the job? I am not saying these officers are incompetent, I am not saying they there is no faith in local law enforcement but there are people who are trained to handle these types of situations and that who needs to be hunting him down. Right now Aaron Bassler is an out of control deadly weapon that needs to be stopped. There is more to this story than the public knows about and there is a reason for that, a reason we may never know because this man will never live to tell his story and that’s a fact.

I saw the photo of 2 dogs and 7-10 police looking for Bassler. Those men must make a lot of noise walking together. Dogs barking. Men talking to each other. Bassler can hear them miles away. Get an Indian from Hoopa or Round Valley to track him down.
They have been doing that for thousands of years, it`s in their blood.

You have a point…We have brave officers but they’re way out of their expertise now including SWAT. Their use of dogs is one example.

SEAL or Special Forces Teams aided by local law enforcement would make quick work of the situation. When Bassler fires at officers, he must be persued to the end, by hard charges that won’t cut him any slack and press on until he’s dead. It works in combat and will work here.

Lotsa armchair quarterbacking here. I guess we’d all like to believe that “if only they would just do ‘X’ they’d have him captured or killed in no time.”

But it’s just not that simple. It’s a large area of very remote, rugged, heavily forested and brush-covered terrain and this guy apparently knows his way around it.

As I said on a previous thread, it’s like finding a needle in a haystack, except that in this case the needle can keep moving around.

Bassler’s only real advantage is that he knows the terrain intimately. He is not professionally trained. In reality, the cops are handling this to perfection. Their #1 goal is to apprehend him without any civilians or LEO’s getting hurt. This isn’t a Rambo movie, you don’t simply charge a suspect in dense cover who is armed with a rifle. It isn’t the cops duty to lay down their life to catch him, it is their duty to prevent anyone else getting hurt, to catch Bassler, and to survive without injury. Dumbasses who advocate sending in hunters and/or other civilians are in reality advocating getting someone else killed. Morons….

This isn’t a Rambo movie to be sure and military professionals could be utilized effectively to capture him. They get paid to find a needle in larger haystacks than this. The current strategy/tactic allows Bassler to roam free and won’t hold water when Bassler kills again. Who is next? Every day he’s out there is one too many.

Rick…….Does it help to vilify concerned citizens with words like moron or dumbass?

Anyone who suggests sending untrained civilians in to do this job is indeed a moron.

Kym, you in the habit of just taking police news reports and printing them as if they are the god’s-gospel truth? Where’s the credible proof, other than accusations, that this is the guy that actually did the reported shooting? I would expect such bullshit coming from Ernie Branscomb, he doesn’t know any better, but you’re half his age…

Obama made it official with the blood of an American citizen – mob rule is now the norm. Murder by accusation works every time when there’s no proof of guilt.

Joe,
would you like me to interview Bassler? There is an eye witness to the Melo murder and DNA linking him to the Coleman murder. Sure, There is a wild chance that someone is framing him. That is what trials are for.
