Aaron Bassler Caught on Camera

One of 40 unmanned surveillance cameras managed to capture the image of the still elusive Aaron Bassler wanted for the murder of former Fort Bragg Mayor, Jere Melo, and Mendocino Land Trust employee, Matthew Coleman. The Ukiah Daily Journal has a solid piece with the latest info as does the Press Democrat.

  • Only a cowardly BASTARD shoots people in the back. Son, you need to turn yourself in NOW or turn that gun on your own sick head.

  • This entire bizarre case reminds me of the guy in New Mexico who was called the “Cookie Bandit” and was an escaped Canadian murderer who was looked at as a suspect in the 2004 Jenner murders, he also broke into cabins and had been killing people for years. He finally was caught by deputies hiding in a cabin and was luckily shot and killed, but sadly after a deputy was also killed. The gun I see in Bassler’s picture looks like a full on AK-47 with a 30 round mag. How he obtained it is what I would like to know as it is a felony to possess in Cal, whoever provided it needs to be arrested. This guy has terroized an entire community long enough and killed long enough. Send in some Marine snipers and get the job done.

  • (((((----Black Flag----))))

The US military teaches how to fire and maneuver in order to flank and shoot people in the back. Marine snipers are just a PR hoax as any DDM worth a shit, left to work in the private sector years ago, they would be better off setting bear traps around to try to catch him. That ‘ak” is just a stamped reciever that would melt and burn off the furniture under any real action- just cali junk. There are no firearms in cali except in the hands of the occupation force that collects taxes for the ferderal reserve and guards their banking system.
The families should just go out and hunt him on their own, bait him with some chicken and shoot him in the back when he tries to surrender. I think the cops are just milking the overtime and might be the ones who are behind the break ins. Anyone who “works’ for government is against private property and lives to punish people for trying to get ahead in life. We may see them want to bulldoze homes and steal private land under the guise of catching this numbskull. Let’s hope the families forgo the “justice system” and take matters into their own hands and get something done for a change.

  • “I don’t care if you DO got a crazed dog’s eyes, Michael Jackson’s nose, your Great Aunt Hattie’s eyebrows AND a pre-ban rock and roll geetar–you’re not comin’ in this here fire lookout with the assler torn outta your Basslers, and that’s my word.”

  • I can guess Bassler, as a convicted multiple criminal offender, wasn’t too concerned with gun laws and their effect. It is interesting to note I have read several accounts of the cartels arming paid drug growers with full on AK-47 rifles which this appears to be.
My thought is first, who supplied Bassler and was he a cartel employee. The gun source in this case, I can only hope is arrested and does some serious time. Bassler has always had an easy access to guns even though he had a serious mental condititon and numerous criminal convictions, this concerns every legit gun owner, as Bassler was seldom ever legally qualified to own a gun, same as the New Mexico killer.

    • Bassler isn’t working for any cartel. He’s seriously mentally ill. Genuinely a lone nut. I know this because I know Aaron and his family. I really am reluctant to say more than that on a public internet forum while there is an ongoing search and investigation. I will say that I am the person responsible for his very first arrest in 1994.

As to the availability of weapons, he’s owned numerous firearms since the time he was 18. His arrest in the 2009 Chinese Consulate incident is * probably* the the first legal incident that would have prohibited him from owning firearms, and if he was ordered to surrender them, I think it is very likely he would have stashed one or more as his “ace in the hole” so to speak.

  • from the UDJ article: “We have every reason to believe he’s in the original area,” Allman said, ” We are in his territory,” which is a 20 mile by 20 mile forested stretch east of Fort Bragg.

20 miles by 20 miles is 400 square miles. That’s a HUGE area to hide in, especially given the terrain. They also mentioned in the UDJ article that they’ve tried using bloodhounds, but the problem is that he’s been all over the place within that territory, and so the bloodhounds find his scent all around, meaning there’s not just one “trail” to follow.

While he could not say exactly where the search borders are, Allman did say that they are not searching south of Highway 20, in the Usal area, or in Brooktrails.

Hope he doesn’t manage to access the internet or come across a copy of this UDJ article while burglarizing a house or cabin, because otherwise it seems like they just told him where he could safely hide.

  • Perhaps heavy rains will coax him out into a more vulnerable position before he uses that AK again.

  • It’s been a month. I wonder what his mind-set is? He must know that if he left the area he could, arguably, have gotten thousands of miles away by now. But apparently he doesn’t want to take that chance. He’s sticking around, but why? Maybe he thinks he can continue to hide in the woods forever. I think it’s just a matter of time, unless he absconds. I heard the sheriff say on Kmud tonight that he has been intimate with that area of land for 30 years, and “knows all the trails and hiding places”. I suspect if he’s captured alive he’ll be found to be on some kind of fantasy about the land that he knows so well, “his land”, probably including aliens from outer space and other warped visions.

    • He’s extremely paranoid of anyone he doesn’t know, and of most people he does know. Leaving the area could require interaction with strangers, which he can’t handle. He’ll stick to familiar ground where he feels safe.

  • Okay. I don’t mean anyone any disrespect, nor do I mean to suggest this is not an extremely serious situation. But, I just can’t get past the peculiar salience of dude appearing to have a massive gash down the rear of his trousers in all this…

I also notice the trigger finger discipline…not clear on what he’s doing with his left hand…shading glare? And what’s going at the end of the barrel of the weapon?

  • There are stories of men evading law enforcement for many years by hiding in woods they are familiar with. This reminds me of the story of Eric Rudolph, also known as the Olympic park bomber. He was responsible for a series of bombings across the southern united states in the late 1990’s.
He, like Bassler was experienced in outdoor survival and navigating the woods. Rudolph managed to evade the feds for five years in the Appalachian wilderness, through the rough winter conditions and all of the seasons.
Bassler knows these woods.. If he was able to travel by foot from Rock port to Noyo Gultch (estimated 20 mi.) he did not do that via Hwy 1 with a rifle across his chest. He hit the woods.

  • This guy Rudolph was captured digging through a dumpster I believe behind a large store back South. The guy much closer to Bassler is the New Mexico murderer, who also lived in the woods, broke into cabins, and killed people for guns, clothing, and food. He was later found, after being killed, to be the wanted Canadian murderer. It is interesting to note Bassler played war games in the very same area he is now in as a child and now is acting out the same things in a deadly combat survival situation. Hindsight might of been to evac his mother out of her rental and put in some SWAT guys to wait for him to show. This worked on the New Mexico killer, who was also caught using remote cameras in the area of the cabins he broke into. same tactic might work here. If not, the Predator drone with a hellfire always does the trick from a mile up.
