Stabbing Rocks Fort Bragg

UPDATE: 5:30pm: In a terse statement, Sheriff Allman said that there had been no homicide in Mendocino.  As yet, there is no explanation of the situation described below.

As news of a stabbing near the Wiggly Giggly Park and city library trickles out, Fort Bragg residents reel.  The news of yet another possible murder near/in this Mendocino tourist town leaves residents rightfully shaken.  Last night, around 9:20, a person was stabbed near the heart of the city in what Fort Bragg Planning Commissioner, Derek Hoyle, explained “appears to me to be a gang initiation.”  As of this afternoon, details were sketchy with law enforcement not yet returning queries about the situation.  Hoyle also is hesitant to speak.  He did say, ” I’m a bit stressed out right now… the murderer is still at large, perhaps still hiding in my neighborhood.”

The possible homicide does not appear  related to those two attributed to Aaron Bassler.  Bassler is on the run from 30- 50 law enforcement officers canvassing the area he was last seen. Fort Bragg, a town of 7,000 has had 4 homicides in as many weeks. Four more deaths than show in available statistics for the entire decade before that according to this site (scroll to the bottom.) Bassler is a suspect in the deaths of former Fort Bragg mayor, Jere Melo, and well-known Mendocino Land Trust Employee, Matthew Coleman.  These homicides and another unrelated one here have already traumatized the residents of the area.  People have kept children home from school and been on edge for weeks.

In a small town like this, nearly everyone knows, at least by sight, one of the victims.  And, with Bassler still at large, they worry that more deaths will happen.

This summer of crime and this town’s murder spree are shocking to everyone. This is a warning to the other small towns in the area what might come their way like the armed robbery in Hydesville. Some criminals will take advantage of the cops being busy elsewhere and start crime sprees but most of these murders seem to be the result of the usual lack of judicial responsibility with the usual offenders with the 10 foot rap sheet and revolving door justice, multiple plea bargains, transients who are time bombs waiting to go off on someone, uncontrolled gangs and unenforced immigration laws and the usual meth tweekers. All in all people need to demand the three strikes laws be enforced to the letter and the plea bargains used very rarely in serious cases. Even more frightening The state has already been ordered to release a few thousand new parolees due to Govt. declared ” “Overcrowding” and these will be the next wave of time bombs waiting to go off.

This was just posted to the mcn listserv:

“I’m glad to report that the stabbing victim is still alive. Also it wasn’t gang related, just Saturday night drunken white guys.
This is from a reliable source whom I can’t identify.”

Which contradicts what I saw and heard, so it will prove interesting to hear what really did happen. So perhaps this should be changed to a Knife attack until we hear otherwise?

Mea culpa … aside from Nick Wilson’s credible report (mentioned above without attribution), I just received word from one of the most reliable official sources in the County that the stabbing victim in Fort Bragg near the Library did NOT die (YAY!!!) despite my sources early reports, and that the search for the assailant is over, and it’s possible that it may not be gang related, but that may be too soon to say and I’m not jumping to any conclusions at this point.

One thing I’d like to say is THANKS to the Fort Bragg Police Department and any other Agency who has helped in this case, you all Rock!

The attacker turned himself in, so he’s not running around loose. That’s
the story I got.

Has the sherrifs department taken basslers moms computer to check it for computer searches, being that she obviously has helped him more than his dad. I believe that there is info pertaning to his possible friends, where he might be.
