Wow! Dobbyn's Creek from the Air

Just before 10 pm last night, I received an email from Southern Humboldt’s Supervisor Clif Clendenen sending me photos of the slide. He addressed the concerns of folk here that landslides didn’t receive the same level of attention as fires do.  He said,

I think it has to do with the unfortunate statistically predictable occurrence of fire, and the fact that landslides of this magnitude and number are rare. That being said, our County team, mostly centered in the Public works Dept. are exploring every avenue.

We’ve gone or sent a variety of folks out to Dobbyn Creek, including Fish and Game, County Environmental Engineering, Roads, Bridges, and more.

Hank Seemann from Public Works was out with NRCS on Thursday 4/14, and they’re exploring restoration funding opportunities. Others too. The State disaster declaration…is better news, but typically only covers county expense (but, of course, we hire local folks so that helps some).

We’re going to do everything we can and leverage anything received as far as we legally can to help, recognizing that teamwork between locals, property owners, county, and other agencies is going to be essential for events of this magnitude.

I asked Diana [Totten] yesterday morning if she would be game to hike me in to Fish Creek and any other sites so I could see and record other damage. I want us to keep the totality of these events in mind, and while recognizing that available funding is scarce, and that there are high thresholds to meet, make sure we’ve explored everything.

Along with that, we at the county remain open to suggestions, and the good work and communication from Kristina Laskar, Diana Totten, and many, many others is essential.

Whether the emergency declaration of Governor Brown yesterday will help with the Dobbyn Creek slide remains to be seen as it is on private property.  It does however affect the county road and the waterways.  It is a Salmon and Steelhead spawning area. This photo below was taken not long before the slide came down–it is of a spawned out salmon.

Now the workers on the site see these fish trapped above the wall of soil.  The fish come down and nose around trying to find their way back downstream.  There is no outlet. Hopefully, funds for fish restoration, road work, and human help are all available.  Right now the landowner, Kristina Laskar, is watching the slide closely as the rain continues to fall.  She said last night late, “The slide moved a lot today. We watched the mud constantly trickling into the creek. The water was rising, then draining, then rising again. I just called over there, and they said it is 1 1/2 feet from the top. So we’re getting up there again, and quick. We’re all on alert, and have a phone tree ready.”

UPDATE: In fact, the water rose so much last night they had to call Diana Totten back over from her home in Benbow.  She said early this morning, ” I was called to come back over at 11pm. At that time the lake was 10″ from overflow into culverts on the county road. The crew had noticed a lot of changes in the natural spillway through the logs and mud. There was a shift underground and the lake level stopped rising at that point. I left the slide at 3am and the crew gave an update at 7am that a lot of erosion is taking place on the dam, yet the water level remains about the same. This could be good news as long as it erodes slowly; if the dam broke away all at once it would be very damaging .

Your very impressive photos still don’t do the slide justice. Too bad that you don’t have a photo of the whole slide. These photos don’t show the middle of the slide or the south fork of the slide that comes into the side that is causing the bulge in the center.

However, still great photo and news service!

I have put broad hints out there that anyone who might happen to want to fly there and send me photos would be rewarded with a batch of cookies. Keep your fingers crossed.

Interesting. What a metaphor. The little house at the bottom, all those involved in saving it, and from this vantage point of seeing the greater forces at work, give the whole scene its due: so much more going on than what we can see from where we stand.

Of course, no words describe how it feels to be invested in that little house, how it sheltered a family, and all that goes with that state of being.

As Californians, and members of our society, we all have huge responsibility in front of us. I have found it strange, as I’ve read your blog and seen the amazing photographs, how surreal it has been, reading the words of people at the Dobbins Creek slide, saying that it wasn’t a priortity. Of course, short-handed, and short $$$ hog-ties the crews. Obviously the heart & soul of community rose to each disastrous slide, a heart and soul which will never be short-handed.

Yeah Lodgepole, thank God for road builders. If it weren’t for them, the north coast would just be one great big pile of mud, no creeks, no canyons… just mud as high as it could be heaped.
