"We Live Among the Best People on Earth:" Letter from The Gunds in Regards to the Kettenpom Tragedy

I thought the non locals who were concerned with this tragedy might appreciate a chance to see the letter Jim Gund wrote to our local paper.

To the Editor:

We want to thank Almighty God for His help and His angels for rescuing us, and helping us escape. There is no way, aside from God’s help, that we could have survived this on our own.

We want to thank all the dear people in Kettenpom/Zenia who worked so hard to save Norma and me. They saved our lives. They are so professional and strong and they did everything right. Thank you to the ambulance staff from Garberville and STAR. All of them worked hard to save us, and they did. The doctor in the ER that night, the nurses, and the staff of our little hospital were very caring and performed above and beyond, as were the doctors at St. Joseph’s and all the nurses that helped me.

Thank you to the woman in the ambulance who rode north with me, telling me where Norma was and letting me know how she was doing, and holding my hand; U.C. Davis medical staff that are so caring, and letting us know that the doctor in Garberville had done such good work on Norma and me; and the merchants who helped us that night with clothing and care, we all know who they are.

Thank you to the pharmacy here for helping co-ordinate our medications with Davis. Thank you to our family, who has been so protective and strong, rising up from the terror to be our support. You have taken such good care of us, and continue to do so. And thank you to our extended family, our people here. We know we live among the best people on earth.

We also want to thank the Mendocino County Sheriff’s Department for doing what they did. They are very brave.

Jim and Norma Gund

I am crying as I read this. It just shows a tiny sliver of the terror that these folks lived through and the most remarkable thing is that the prevailing, lingering notion after such an experience would be: gratitude.

For the help they received, for the good people they encountered, for the fact that they survived, for what went right.

Inspiring.

I’m glad that Jim and Norma are all right. I think that Jim and Norma are being too humble, much of the credit for their good outcome is due to their indomitable spirit, and their strong sense of right and wrong. I’m sincerely glad that they and their “ilk” are doing well. (those that used to read his letters to the editor will know what I mean)
