Hwy 101 Open to One Way Controlled Traffic at 2am Monday Morning
Even office staff at Caltrans have been working overtime to get the massive slide that closed Highway 101 Wednesday morning cleared. Information officer, Julie East, went in Sunday evening to pull together the following press release so that everyone can get where they are going as soon as possible. Kudos to Caltrans (a bit of clarification for those who are new readers here, my grandfather, my father, and my husband all worked/work at Caltrans) and to Shea Construction as well as the innumerable dump truck drivers, heavy equipment operators, inspectors etc. who worked dangerously long hours to get this road open!
HIGHWAY WILL REOPEN TO CONTROLLED TRAFFIC
AT 2:00 AM ON MONDAY, APRIL 4
Eureka – Caltrans is pleased to announce that Route 101 in Southern Humboldt County will reopen to one-way controlled traffic at 2:00 AM on Monday, April 4. Motorists should expect 30-minute delays. No further closures will occur unless significant slide activity resumes. Crews continue to work 24 hours a day to complete slide removal, repair the roadway, and monitor the slide.
The highway was closed on Wednesday morning due to a large mudslide approximately one mile north of Dean Creek, approximately 60 miles south of Eureka. Caltrans will issue another update by noon on Monday, April 4.
All work is weather dependent. For the most current road information on all State highways, please call 1-800-427-7623 (1-800-GAS-ROAD) or visit www.dot.ca.gov.

Thanks, Kym, for your up-to-date information. I just wanted to add……I have heard a lot of rumblings about why Caltrans hired Shea./ why not locals. Shea was already in the vicinity and, with a huge disaster such as this one, they needed expediency and they needed a large-enough contractor to handle the enormous job of clearing and repairing the roadway. Caltrans made the best decision at the time to get workers on site asap in order to get the roadway opened for the traveling public. I just couldn’t stand silent while people were squawking from their armchairs about hiring locals. Truth be told, Caltrans contributes to the employment of many many many local people in Humboldt County (including myself). I appreciate my job and I appreciate the hard work I witness my co-workers doing every day. Thanks again, Kym.
I agree. Though it is helpful when Shea hires as many locals as possible to do dump truck loads etc.
We are truly grateful for the up to date information this website provides.

Thank you for the update, I will be driving up the 101 this Friday to Crescent City. I am a bit confused by one-way does that mean coming from Eureka only? I need to make sure I plan an alternate route.
It should be two way today but one way controlled means that flaggers stop the north bound land and let the south bound lane through then they alternate continuously throughout the day.
