Haunted by the Unseen–Japan's Nuclear Crisis

THE cow wasn’t quite dead, but it was dying, and no one who knew about its distress cared enough to save it. It lay twitching feebly, alongside the deserted road. There was a bloated corpse in the adjoining field, and two more in the byre of the next door farm. The animal gave out low, rhythmic moans as it struggled to breathe in and out.

They were terrible to hear. What do you do for a cow dying of thirst? I had no idea. The farmer had gone, and there was, in any case, no water in the taps. The man who had brought us to this forbidden place crouched beside it and stroked its head sadly. “It is the same for the people who come from this area,” he said. “They may give us food and water, but they don’t care about us. They have left us for dead too.”

This is the hidden face of the Fukushima crisis

The above comes from Haunted by the Unseen in the Quake’s No-go Zone. Published this morning in Australia, it takes you into the zone around Fukushima.  The stark, apocalyptic view of the area will haunt me for the rest of my life. Take two minutes and read it.

An excellent summary of the current situation at the Fukushima plant can be found at the Union Of Concerned Scientists’ “All Things Nuclear” blog, under the title “3-Week Update on Japan’s Nuclear Crisis,” dated April 2, 2011:

I hear what you are saying, This is soooooo haunting. I’m sure I’ll have stark apocalyptic nightmares and terrible visions of bloated cows etc, too, probably be chased by weird phantasms for the rest of my life. Thankfully, the way things are going in this unbalanced world, that won’t be very long. But it is so sad to see this tribulation tormenting so many. And personally, yours truly, is especially pained by and extra sensitive to having to witness all of the horrible suffering involved. It strikes me right in the heart area. Palpitations. I woke up the night before last at 3am, shaking. And it gives me diarrhea too, terrible diarrhea until there is nothing left inside of me. And a funny taste in my mouth. What next –and I’m not sure the cause. Nor do I trust the Geiger counters. There’s a lot of things going on at this critical time and as I said, the way I feel about this disaster is just horrible. 2112 is next year for those of you who are aware of the implications of that. Less than nine months away. It’s not gonna be pretty folks. All we can do at this point is up the efforts to organize faster and more and do everything possible to fight this evil crisis that threatens all of us. I’m praying for everyone, hang in there.

Like me, you may have thought that the U.S. nulear industry had reached the absolute limit of jackassery when one of their leading spokesmen responded to the Fukushima disaster by calling nuclear power a “clean, safe, emission-free” energy source.

But you’ll have to admit that the Indian nuclear industry has at least matched — and perhaps even surpassed — the U.S. industry’s jackassery with this amazing statement from the Nuclear Power Corporation of India:

“There is no nuclear accident or incident in Japan’s Fukushima plants. It is a well planned emergency preparedness programme.” S.K. Jain, Chairman, Nuclear Power Corporation of India Ltd (NPCIL)

Remember a few days ago when radioactivity 3 or 4,000 times the legal limit was being found in the seawater near the plant. That pales by comparison to today’s reading:

Radioactive iodine 7.5 million times legal limit found in seawater near Reactor 2
