We Love Humboldt–Thanks to the Community and All the People Who Work To Make It Wonderful

We know the County guys have been working long hard hours. The last two days have been lovely but before that they were working in snow and rain for weeks.  You can help tell them thanks with donations of homemade food and beverages. Anyone wishing to send snacks and edible love to our road crews contact Autumn @ 223-2322 or Yurtcutie@  yahoo.com for more information!

Also SoHum Awareness, the Facebook site for crisis situations in Southern Humboldt has an astounding 833 friends in just a few short days. I’m glad so many of you are finding the information you need at this new site started by Bobbi Wisby and Estelle Fennell.

And I want to say thanks to all of you readers for hurtling  Kim Sallaway’s and my OMG the hill ate the road post to the top read WordPress posts today.  WordPress.com (the most popular blogging platform online) has listed this story as number 50 of their top 100 read posts today! And, they have over 400,000 posts per day. It can’t last but it sure is fun.

Outstanding. All the way around, Kym.

SoHum folks, it was rockingly impressive how well you all quickly organized pulling together and without complaint. This didn’t go unnoticed and deserves merit. So does your Facebook SoHum Awareness page connecting everyone and sorting information, updating traveling routes and road/snow conditions, opening up your homes and barns ‘n breakfasts for stranded or weary neighbors, safely sorting out the school kids making sure everyone got home– with no child left behind, and a whole lot more done for everyone’s behalf. You did very, very well doing what governments only wish and try to plan for: you’ve prepared and organized for yourselves.

Bobbi ,Estelle, and Kym deserve a medal of ‘Valorous Commendation and Kind Consideration for creating Caring and Capable Community,’ as well as the nomination in the ‘Utter and Complete Sheer Brilliance of An Idea’ category. Yours truly considers this major nuisance and headache of a mini-disaster, and the Briceland Road washout, a trial run for when a bigger emergency happens, or, the Big One.

Nice job, Kim and Kym. This site rocked for organizing things, providing links, info, pictures, updates, phone numbers, and you know, having all the important stuff as the SoHum ground zero clearinghouse of information. As well as providing a sense of calm, cool headedness, and voyeuristic pictures for the curiously intrigued.

Caltrans, CHP, County and State road crews, Shea Construction and private contractors, Charlie the Happy Engineer, KHUM, KMUD, Autumn and Yurtcutie– and all of you helping folks that yours truly can’t mention by name here (but you know who you are!)– good job and thank you for working to make Humboldt a wonderful place.

You have done a remarkable job of journalism, Kym. You deserve a SoHum Pulitzer. Then again, everyone has pitched in so well. I heard someone on KMUD today suggest that we have been overwhelmed by the slide crisis. I will not repeat my mental response. The power of the internet is amazing to an old fart like me.
What was truly spooky was the first part of our trip to Eureka today on an empty freeway. I have to admit I wanted to floor it. Weird.

Weird I thought we had kicked ass on the slide. The roads are rough but kids got home, gas and food are available. Information got passed. This community solves its problems! I kinda of feel like a spider. I just sat here and let the information come to me (well okay I worked the phones) but people commented, sent pics (Kim Sallaway daredevil photographer!), sent info–They made the story come together. I just got it onto the internet.

I have a new resolution to drive slower and keep my neighbors happy. I hope I can keep it up when I head to Eureka on the nearly empty freeway tomorrow.
