101 Closed North of Garberville

PHOTO UPDATE: By Eli DeVita

Photo Update from Brian Sargent

Photo UPDATE from Mark Lovelace taken by CHP Lieutenant Adam Jager:

UPDATE: 4:18 : More photos from Will Hurlbutt the rancher whose land  is swallowing 101. His son is the handsome young man in the first two photos.  The land has been in his family for generations. (I hear that if the contractor who will be working on this wants to dump the soil on the ranch then they’ll need a permit.  Apparently, the soil once it leaves its ranch, it needs a permit to call it home again.;>)

Don’t forget SoHum Awareness on Facebook for the latest info.

UPDATE 3:46: So Humb Dist. Office says that there are only a handful of kids left at the school. They have a van to transport them if necessary. But not to worry “We will take care of them.”

UPDATE 2:45: Great photos from CHP here

UPDATE 2:29: According to the SoHumboldt Unified School Dist. Redway Elementary, South Fork High School, and Osprey Learning Center will be closed Thursday and Friday.

UPDATE 1:54: Remember, I want to caution folk who are not familiar with our area not to use the backroads and even those who are familiar to avoid them as they will get clogged rapidly and accidents may probably will happen. However, Dyerville Loop rd (see update 1:13) is now plowed and open to one way controlled traffic.  Please proceed with caution and only if absolutely necessary.  No big rigs allowed.

UPDATE 1:20: Times Standard’s take on this.

UPDATE 1:13: I want to caution folk who are not familiar with our area not to use the backroads and even those who are familiar to avoid them as they will get clogged rapidly and accidents may probably will happen.  However,  here is a link to an excellent site with alternative routes and the issues that may be involved with taking them.

UPDATE:11:54 Schools will send out plan via ALL CALL

UPDATE:11:51: KMUD has Great photos!

UPDATE: 11:23 CHP says 2 weeks closure.

UPDATE 11:19: County Roads has two snowplows going up Dyerville. One from each side but the road is officially closed and they have no estimated time of opening

UPDATE 11:05: Link for Big Rig operators.

Dave – how about a link to your blog?

So this is a slide onto the road rather than a slide out? I sure hope so.

Yikes… Can folks get off the fwy and get to Phillipsville? or do they have to go around say. Fruitland Ridge? I would like to see some alternative routes being suggested.

CHP is saying two weeks. Privately I’m hearing that 3 days they may be able to punch a road through.

There is no good way around for most. There is some local ways that I’ve been asked not to publish yet because they are not good roads and they could get jammed by non locals etc. with accidents happening. I’m looking into publishing an alternate route as soon as possible. Dyerville Loop is closed due to snow though county has two snowplows en route one from each end. No estimated time of opening.

KMUD saying 2 weeks?… That seems unlikely.

I think it’s like Scotty always did to Captain Kirk. He’d overestimate the time to stretch it out. “Captain, I need and hour’ to which the Captain replies, “You have 20 minutes” where he might only have been given 10.

I’ll bet this will bring in more business for the Garberville area, nothing like a bunch of trapped folks spending money at our local merchants ; )

I wonder how this will effect UPS and Fedex shipments from Southern California?
Normally packages go to Eureka first and them come down to the Garberville area.

Thanks for keeping us updated Kym!

I called UPS they said they are still making plans but items are coming into Eureka thru 299 via Hwy5.

Fedex recommends calling 1800 463 3339 ask for a rep. then ask for EKAA for info on your package. But they are definitely not delivering today;>

Kym, we drove in on Dyerville Loop yesterday. It is open to local traffic only. There are some bad spots…mostly deep potholes on the Alderpoint end and several places where small failures due to drainage would make it a challenge for 2 vehicles to pass one another. 4 wheel/high clearance is a good idea. SLOW is a really good idea. Elk Creek Road (connects Dyerville Loop to the Avenue of the Giants has a SIGNIFICANT failure 1.5-2 miles up from the Ave. The lens of the road has failed and is down to 1 lane, very soft and currently maintained by gravel fill. I don’t recommend that at all. The oly other exit from Dyerville is down past McCann and through Founder’s Grove: steep, winding and mostly dirt. Not a good route.

alkp, I didn’t know that you didn’t have to be part of Facebook til you told me! I’m so glad it works like that. I’ve already been told that many of the agencies whose phones would be ringing off the hook have had much quieter days than they expected. I credit So Hum Awareness (and if I’m wrong, don’t tell me. It has made me happy all day;> )

kym- i personally think the sohum awareness site is why those phones haven’t been ringing so much. 🙂 i was relaying information that was posted on there to others… this is one reason why facebook and twitter are so great– they allow the quick transfer of information.

so thank you again to you and the other creators for having the site public!

i really do love this community. blessings~

SoHum Awareness site already has over 800 “friends.” Bobbi Wisby who came up with the idea and did the work of setting it up as well as providing info deserves a lot of credit as does Estelle Fennell who knows who to ask and how to word things to provide the most helpful information.

It looks like Great Spirit roll up the Earth is starting. I wonder if rich grove has anything to do with this. I think its related to the FBI cointelpro holyland just up the hill on the other side of the river
