Let's Not Forget Japan:Radiation Readings 10 Million Times Normal in Leaking Water at #2 Reactor

[youtube=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xOfy1CoxrMo&feature=player_embedded]

Above is more stunning new footage from the tsunami that struck Japan on March 11th.  But the bad news still continues to roll over that stricken country in wave after wave.  Today, it was announced that radiation readings 10 million times usual have been found in leaking water at the number 2 nuclear reactor at Fukushima.  Measurements in the sea near the plant show radioactive iodine 1,850 times the normal amount. The death toll is over 10,000 and over 17,000 are still missing. (See BBC for more.)

For those of you with family in Japan.  Here are the radioactive levels in drinking water and fallout by prefecture. Here are the readings of environmental radiation by prefecture.

FYI google just updated their satelite shots of humboldt…

…in 10 years, when thousands (millions?) of people are getting sick and dying prematurely in japan and elsewhere due to exposure…with no just dues…will this be yesterdays news? chernobyl? is that a species of hamster?

Random Guy, I checked the update on Google Earth for our house. Still the same shot. But they probably have updated the urban areas. So folk might want to check.

Don’t know whether those maps are accurate or not, but the website they are on is certainly not credible. It’s run by Alex Jones, noted scaremongering profiteer, whose radio show and website pushes all sorts of “survivalist” products, including the most ridiculously overpriced seeds, which are not even geared to the specific climate of the suckers who buy them. Also incredibly overpriced MRE’s (Meals Ready to Eat), etc.

And even as Jones has whipped his fans up in to a frenzy of paranoia over radioactivity in the U.S. (which at most will receive very modest doses from Japan) he’s raking in the dough from the sales of potassium iodine advertised on his site. Beyond ripping Americans off by selling them something they don’t need (and which will probably cause far more health problems than the tiny does of radiation that we might get here) this sort of fearmongering/profiteering in America has depleted supplies of potassium iodine on the world market, leading to a shortage of supplies for the people who really need it, in Japan. Disgusting.

Jones is a charlatan, and a greedy sleazebag profiteer, no better than Glen Beck or any of the frightwingers.

I have no idea who Alex Jones is, but that people have been telling me to “check him out” for quite some time. Don’t let him be a scapegoat for complacence, ala “it’s bad, but not THAT bad….”

…we’re talking about MEGA-DEADLY-NUCLEAR SHIT. The industry has just effectively killed and crippled millions, the pollution in the ocean is irreparable. I don’t care if this Alex Jones guy is claiming Japan fell into the ocean and no longer exists…we have to refuse to downplay the magnitude of what’s happening to the health of the planet.

According to the BBC, the source now says that reading was wrong, although reading the article I got the sense that they just don’t know if the reading was right…. See http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-asia-pacific-12875327.

MM, After reading VOA, too, I’m going to just monitor the situation instead of updating the post above as there is no outright retraction but instead a sense of confusion. I almost get the feeling of that VOA published about 8am Pacific Time thinks that the initial story is still accurate.

The current info is that the radiation readings were 100,000 times normal–a few zeros that to most of just mean that it is very bad. That order of magnitude at those levels seems to make little difference to most of us.

Here’s the latest:

The radioactive core in a reactor at the crippled Fukushima nuclear power plant appears to have melted through the bottom of its containment vessel and on to a concrete floor, experts say, raising fears of a major release of radiation at the site.

Not good. Not good at all.

Hi kym, I noticed your blog wasn’t just local stuff, since you have this here Japanese section, so I thought you might run a little story about some of the real news from LIBYA. The above is about our favorite “bunglers” the CIA.

Pagun,
I need to get up to speed on what is happening in Libya. I don’t write about something unless I have something to say, to add to the conversation. But I’ve enjoyed just putting together links on Japan that I thought were important. Maybe I should try that with Libya as I do some research on it. (Don’t hold your breath though. My husband is trying very hard not to melt down about the lack of attention around the house but I think this last month is wearing him out;> )

Union of Concerned Scientists’ daily briefing for 3/29 still not up on their website. I’m guessing that they were busy with their Congressional testimony. In the meantime:

Kyodo: Seawater radioactivity level off #Fukushima-1 has risen to 4385x legal limit.

http://twitter.com/W7VOA#

and

29 March: TEPCO continued to spray water into reactors 1-3 and discovered that radioactive runoff water was beginning to fill utility trenches outside the three reactor buildings. The highly radioactive water in and around the reactor buildings continued to limit progress by technicians in restoring the cooling and other automated systems to the reactors.

30 March: TEPCO Chairman Tsunehisa Katsumata announced at a news conference that it was presently unclear how the problems at the plant would be resolved. An immediate difficulty was the removal of large quantities of radioactive water in basement buildings, but also salt built up inside the reactors from using sea water for cooling needed to be removed. Building new concrete walls around the reactors was being considered as had been done at Chernobyl.

From what I can gather, the situation at the Fukushima nuclear plant is most certainly NOT under control:

*Radioactive water continues to impede workers’ effort to try to get the situation under control.

* Some experts believe that one of the reactor vessels may already have breached (dumping melted down radioactive fuel into the earthquake-damaged “containment,”).

* There are indications that some uncontrolled chain reactions have occured even after the reactors were shut down.

* Radioactivity levels in the nearby seawater continue to rise rapidly, hitting a new high today.

* High levels of radioactivity are being found well outside the evacuation zone.

Meanwhile, the Japanese government is openly talking about the “Chernobyl solution” of building a huge “sarcophagus” around the plant.

Japan is considering pouring concrete into its crippled Fukushima atomic plant as the United Nations’s nuclear watchdog agency warned that a potential uncontrolled chain reaction could cause further radiation leaks…melted fuel in the No. 1 reactor building may be causing isolated, uncontrolled nuclear chain reactions, Denis Flory, nuclear safety director for the UN’s International Atomic Energy Agency, said at a press conference in Vienna….
