HWY 101 Closed and so is HWY 96

UPDATE: As of 10:20 pm, one lane controlled traffic (that means flagman) on 101.

According to Caltrans, the following roads are closed

Highway 101 is closed 1.5 miles north of the junction with State Route 1 in Leggett due to a rock slide.  Motorists are advised to use an alternate route. [The only alternate route I’m aware of is Bell Springs Rd.]

State Route 96 is closed 1 mile east of the south junction of State Route 169 in Weitchpec due to a rock slide [three 8-12 foot diameter boulders!] Motorists are advised to use an alternate route.

I was wondering what kind of road Bell Springs Road was. Thanks for posting. I won’t try it.

I’m not hearing that it is that bad. I think it is just a maintenance cleanup not a long term construction problem.

Yah, not a road to travel if you can avoid it. It’s pretty narrow too, I think, though it has been years since I was on it.

Bell Springs Road gets up over 3,000 feet at Bell Springs and there’s 2 or 3 feet of snow up there which means ice under the snow. PG&E uses snow cats up there in these conditions.
