A Covelo woman who was wanted on a felony warrant drowned in the Eel River while trying to run from police Tuesday night, according to the Garberville Area California Highway Patrol.

A Laytonville resident CHP officer stopped the 27-year-old driver of a 1997 Jeep at 4:07 p.m. on Highway 1 west of Highway 101 near Leggett. The officer knew that the driver, who was the only person in the car, was wanted on a Mendocino County no-bail, felony warrant.

As soon as the Jeep stopped, the woman got out and ran, according to the CHP. She ran down a steep embankment and jumped into the Eel River, which was swollen from recent rain, running swiftly and muddy.

The officer lost sight of the woman as she floated downstream, the CHP stated, and CHP dispatch notified the Mendocino County Sheriff’s Office, additional CHP units, Cal Fire, the Leggett Volunteer Fire Department and the Southern Humboldt Technical Rescue Team.

The woman was found dead several hours later, submerged in the river. Responders could not recover her body because of hazardous river conditions and darkness.

Early the next morning, the Southern Humboldt Technical Rescue Team, Cal Fire and the LVFD responded to the scene again and recovered the woman’s body from the river.

The MCSO is investigating the incident. The woman’s name has been withheld pending notification of her next of kin.

My name is Liz Russell. Im from San Antonio tx. The girl that drowned was my daughter, Nicole Rae Pollard-Wilburn. It was the most horrible day of my life finding out that my daughter was dead. So many questions and crazy things goin through my head since that very day. One of yhe main questions i have and always will is why the officer felt the need to taser my daughter as she was jumping in flooded river. Ill never understand this. I cant get an answer out of police officer as the whole department denied ever tasering her YET the coroner sent me the autopsy along with a notation about how upset she was that the police dept did INDEED taser her and admitted to this act to the medical examiner and she had to do a post exam-exam. Can anyone shed some light on this or give me a reasonable explanation as to WHY the hell they would attempt to taser my daughter as shes about to jump into a raging flooded river? Anybody? Anywhere?
