Would You Pay $1000 for a Kid's Book?

You might not want to let your little one put their peanut butter and jam hands on the pages  of the children’s book shown here because Amazon.com shows it listed for $987.65.  It’s Just a Plant follows little Jackie as she learns about marijuana from a farmer, a doctor, and others.  The illustrated  book is out of print (hence, the price tag) but you can read the beginning here.

As a sad statement on society, Amazon offers a list of books that customers who have purchased this item (presumably when it was in print and cheaper) have also bought and the list includes Visiting Day about a child visiting her father in prison. In It’s Only A Plant, little Jackie experiences the illegality up close.

Before he could even finish, two police officers drove up and told the men to turn around and put their hands up against the wall!

Jackie looked at an officer and asked him, “Mister, why are you arresting these people?”

“Young lady,” answered the policeman, “These men were smoking what I call grass, and that is against the law.”

“Marijuana isn’t against the law!” said Jackie.

“Yes.. it is,” he said slowly.
“Let me try to explain…”

Unfortunately, the whole book isn’t on line.  If you need to read the rest….Got money?

I collect rekkidz….only buy them second hand…check ones I think might be rare online, etc….over the last few years I’ve noticed an explosion of amazon and ebay sellers jacking the price of select inventory WAY up, banking on the future collector etc. HUNDREDS of dollars for records that I got for a quarter, it’s hilarious. Anyway, first thing that came to mind reading this was the popular “a child’s garden of grass” from the early 70’s. I’ve got the record, and a book came before it. On ebay going for about twenty bucks tops (record or the book), whereas several amazon sellers have it at over a hundred bucks!!! No doubt negotiable…

Give me a thousand bucks, I’ll make your kids one helluva one-of-a-kind book AND take them out to chuck e cheese.

That’s a great idea. I could photoshop your kid’s pic into pot gardens for a $1000….

Abe Books has a couple copies in the $36 range. Abe facilitates sales for independent bookstores. There are also copies selling for $200. When in doubt, set up an eBay search and you’ll receive an e-mail when a copy turns up through the auction route.

The funny thing is, Abe Books is owned by Amazon. I’m surprised Amazon doesn’t list the lower prices.

Sure, there are opportunists out there ($75 for a Doctor Who sewing pattern book? How cruel!), but then another seller comes along and you buy it for $11. I try not to spend more than 25 cents for a book, unless I really need a title right away.

It’s only recently that ABEbooks (where I list some of my rarer books also) was acquired by Amazon; Abe still runs fairly independently. Though how long this will last….well, I was very sad when Amazon moved in on what was a charmingly cooperative arrangement.

Unbelieveable!

My cheap habit of always buying a paperback when a new book comes out (as opposed to waiting for a hard bound edition) appears to have paid off in this case. I have the “It’s Just A Plant,” paperback (2005) in my book collection. Hard to think someone would pay a grand for it!
That’s more than some of the rare old hardbacks I have. Go figure.

I may have to buy one of those cheaper copies just to find out how little Jackie does.

Lot’s of wonderful information in the comments today. I have been using Bookfinder.com for many years, it compares many sites including Abe and Amazon. Sad to hear that Am bought Abe. As for a $1000 book, I guess that is a treat for a very successful grower, not me.

Hey Kym,
I have a copy that was given to my family when my son was born. I’ll show it to you next time you come by the house. It wasn’t rare when we got it. It is pretty funny and full of pot stereotypes. The guys who get arrested are all Jamaicans. The pot farmer that she meets looks like a scary hillbilly.
