Landlord Coming To Inspect. How Can I Hide My Indoor Grow?

A local Craigslist poster had a little trouble so he went online to ask for help.

My100 year old landlady left a notice on my door this morning stating she wanted to do a walk thru. i think she smelled my gro..

He seems to be a bit confused about what is legal or not.

I got a legit 215 and so does my lady so together we got just our 99 plants each and 1500 watts each we made sure NOT to do anything illegal or wrong. Our grow is split in 2 sides with a script in each area.

He’d made just a few minor modifications to the rental.

Where we need help is that we had to modify some venting and filled 1 room with dirt..

I mean, c’mon, what so wrong with filling a room with dirt? He did protect the floor.

but we did use several tarps tacked up high on the wall for liner, covered that with plastic and laid as not to hurt the floor

He did make just one liiittle, tiiiiiny electrical adjustment

…we tapped off the 220 for the electric dryer and made our own “circuit line” back to the room to run our stuff at 220.

He figures the elderly woman is so unreasonable she might not be happy with this  minor adjustment so he’s wondering

…[C]an she evict us for our LEGAL grow? I dont think she would notice the new electrical cuz it went uner the floor but she would surely see the 2nd room full of dirt or maybe we could just lock the door cuz that is the only real sign of pot in the house other than pipes and debris.

He knows the pipes and the debris aren’t going to upset her but a room full of dirt might be just a wee bit problematic.  Heck, she just might go so far as to try and toss him out.  He’s not guilty of anything, of course but he might need some advice in case that elderly woman gets rude and pushy.

Has anybody had experience fighting the landlord who tries to put a innocent person on the street? Or any information of who I can get on my defense in case she tries to kick us out

The guy and his girlfriend have had a hard time.

we both lost our jobs cuz of the economy.

But he’s a great tenant.

[We] are NEVER late with our rent. And we do all our own maintenance

even running exciting new electrical lines and he does

yard work too

He cares about the lawn so much he’s  growing the grass inside and he loves the weed to weed.

According to a later post by the same fellow, he got some ideas from other Craigslist readers and he’s not worried anymore.  He just

… changed the door knob..got 1 with a lock on it now.. i will tell the old bat it is locked accidental and cant get in.. fuck her!!!! rest of the house will be clean and i can burn incense to cover any smell.

i dont think she can tell i am growing

In a still later post, he explains he’s not worried even if she does figure it out.

… a bro sent me an email from a lawyer in berkeley that states it is illegal to throw me out for legally prescribed medication and she will be locked up in the court process for months without me paying any rent plus she will have to retain a attorney big $$$$$ for her. she wont do it.

Even if he is forced out, he has a plan.

…if i do have to leave i can just thrash the walls and leave the electrical way it is.. she’ll have to get a electician in here to str8’n this shiznit out LOLOL

Now why would anyone want to lose such a thoughtful tenant?

Arrrgh! This guy makes me want to kick him in the… well somewhere unpleasant! I wish I knew his landlord so I could tell her to have PG&E turn off the power to his home until a licensed bonded electrician could fix what he’s done before he burns the place down with his #%@#$ bag wiring job. Why does he think it’s Okay to fill a room with dirt? Why does he… Oh never mind. He’s an idiot, that’s why. People like him amaze me, and not in a good way 🙁

you are absolutely correct I am going through this exact problem He put holes in my walls there’s two by fours hanging The whole area smells like pot from people who can walk on the street they can smell it He’s had a car out front that has no wheels no tires just a shell It’s unregistered and I have been so nice to not call the city and have them ticket him But with no registration they can very well took him ticket meme I’m very seasoned in this shit and he just got two weeks to get the hell out because his harvest is in two weeks boy he’s going to be a busy guy those last two weeks. This guy sounds like a total ambassel considerate Are you kidding me buy a house if you want to do that crap

Oh wait I forgot to mention one very important thing you can’t change a lock on a person who owns the property. That is a huge no-no That right there is enough to kick you out.
You think you’re so clever and hey she’s got you by the balls. There’s not a court, are probably more true a mediator which obviously I have been seasoned in this after 15 years of renting my own properties. I can’t believe how they give themselves such entitlement I’m not really doing anything you’re screwing with my electrical in my house are you kidding me and you’re venting up into my attic hot air It’s unbelievable. I don’t know where somebody wouldn’t find that totally unacceptable I don’t know what to release says but I can tell you it doesn’t say anything about modifications without pre-approval I’ll guarantee it. I never got called and he doesn’t pick up his dog crap in the backyard I mean this guy is is a piece of… Work.

Every landlord’s dream tenant… and someday it may be “discrimination” to *not* rent to folks who trash your house like jackasses because of their “medical disability” that requires them to fill the house with dirt, cut holes in the walls, and do a few electrical “modifications” — etc. etc. etc. Call me bitter but I wouldn’t want rude people like that in my house if I were a landlord, even if they *didn’t* grow the lawn indoors!

in that case he’s discriminating against landlords and discriminating against people who have and he has not and he is taking it upon himself to say well they can afford it they have this and I’m unable to get my own house so as far as I’m concerned that’s prejudice I’m just screw it just throw it back at him.

maybe any landlord who is thinking of renting should modify at least one room or their garage for a grow room, making sure the wiring is up to code , and make it easy for their future renters to just move in and plug in! NOT…just being sarcastic.

This couple is whack. Fill a room with dirt, HUH? Change the wiring, 3000 watts, 198 plants. Pay the rent ontime, ruin the house. Who wouldn’t want to evict these people?
What is the “legitimate” ailments they used to get the 215s?
BOGUS.
Like the man behind home plate says’ “You are out!”
What is wrong with destroying a rental property? Or theatening to leave the house destroyed if he is told to move on? If this was my property to deal with PGE would be off, and the nastiest folks I know would show up to discuss the situation with the tenants. There wouldn’t be any lawyer expenses, or time spent wasted with the court system.
They would be soooooo happy to move out after fixing my place back up to code and niceness.
Who needs a lawyer dealing with attitudes like his?

They don’t have to pay an attorney for one thing it’s probably going to be in small claims court. I have it in my lease that they will in fact even if it’s out of their deposit pay for any attorney fees I will incur.

Let’s remember that there are people here in Humboldt County who are rabidly anti-grow house, and they are not above posting a little creative writing on the internet. Craigslist is a convenient venue for fiction.

Sure, there have been irresponsible indoor growers who have trashed rentals, but there have been likewise plenty of irresponsible outdoor grow ops with diesel spills, pesticides, herbicides, destruction of watershed, overuse of water resources (dry creeks and loss of fish habitat.)

Don’t get me wrong, I am one of the people who thinks that organically grown outdoor Humboldt marijuana is the best on Earth, but I don’t turn down my nose at really good indoor pot either. I think both have a place.

And, yes I do realize that it doesn’t make a lot of sense to burn carbon to grow plants.

Indoor grows exist mainly because marijuana is still illegal. Legalize it and these grow house problems will be mitigated. Once cannabis is legal and in the white market, any remaining indoor grows (except of course personal grows) can and should be moved to industrial areas with wiring up to code and environmental controls.

Even if this Craigslist yarn is true, its kind of like watching video of a gay rights march, they show you a few outrageous people but leave out the thousands of folks who may be gay but are a bit less extreme. Lots of people grow pot indoors for a living, it is a cottage industry just like you folks have in SoHum. Most of them own their own homes. Landlords in Arcata and Eureka know who they are renting to, that’s why they charge $500 a month more for their rentals than they are worth. Many of these landlords are underwater on their investments and they are desperate to keep them rented at a price that will service their mortgages. It is convenient for them that their tenants take all the risks of the marijuana trade but share their profits with the landlord. It is a modern version of sharecropping.

That’s the real story.

have a peaceful day,
Bill

Bill,

My first thought on reading this posting was that it must be akin to an Onion article–full of hyperbole to make a point about the evils of indoor growing. But after reading the various exchanges and following the acrimonious insults bounced from one side to the next, I’m sure that the poster is real.

I do want to note that It wasn’t my intention to tar all indoor growers with the same brush as this fellow. I’m not a fan of indoor grows because I’d rather see sunlight than electricity used to grow marijuana but I don’t think all indoor growers are as uncaring of their fellow humans as this one is. In fact, most aren’t.

So… Back in the 90s, two friends purchased a McKinleyville house for cheap with the intention of an investment rental. The new renters paid on time and kept up the yard so my friends, who were living in SoHum, were unconcerned. After about 18 months, the rent cased. They went up to check the place and found the tenants gone. When they opened the front door, they found that the tenants had sawed out the floors of the whole house and were growing using the soil underneath. The windows were blacked out, the sheetrock moldy and all the fixtures gone. No sinks, toilet, shower etc. The wiring was a disaster waiting to happen.
This was back when indoor made big money and the tenants had bailed and left the area.
I suspect there are many stories like this. My understanding is that landlords find it virtually impossible to prevent indoor grows.

Jahburger,

Glad to have you here. One thing I ask is that people be respectful. I find that otherwise people stop talking they start shouting. That doesn’t mean you can’t say that you don’t think it happened but please do so politely.

You are correct Bill, and Kym, in stating that many growers’ attitudes are much better than illustrated above… yet I think this story resonates with the many experiences we have all witnessed or heard of locally and that’s why we’re so disgusted by the scenario. Where are people’s manners these days?!?

And they both “lost their jobs because of the economy”. Yep, I’m sure that was the reason. Not their work ethic or logic…it’s the economy. Cripes!

Read the article. Twice. This grower(s) sounds eerily similar to a personality disorder we call sociopathy. I’ve had the professional displeasure of working with many.

A sociopath has no conscience, shame, remorse, guilt, or embarrassment; twisting, manipulating, taking advantage of others; often living on the fringes of society yet somtimes rising high in the station of life, as well; making their victims out to be fools while claiming to be the real victims themselves. An odd characteristic of sociopathy is not having a real conscience, they must mimic real emotions… often seeming flat or ‘tinny’ in doing so (i.e., think ‘crocodile tears’). Sociopathy is a true condition: no cure or treatment and representing 4% of our population– 1 in every 25 persons.

A sociopath could very well be the neighbor next door to you, or your tenant. While not all are criminally oriented, there are examples in the newspaper everyday for your observation. Now that I’ve described the type– you’ll have your own ideas and should question your friends and acquaintances if there’s an inkling of doubt or concern. Good thing. For the Dear Reader: follow your intuition and listen to your inner ‘red flags’ when they come up with a potential sociopath– even momentarily. Poor landlady.

~Kym, on another note, I was wondering if you’d want to post a link to ‘Trim Camp’ if appropriate? It has some of the better blog writing I’ve enjoyed, though the posts are admittedly few. Thanks… keep up the good work, and BTW, your site consistently rocks!

Most renters who are growing are being absolutely respectful of their landlords. This story is an example of an extreme. I live in Colorado and I know many renters who grow. All have had the electrical updated, 100 % up to code, in a way that is easily reversed when they leave. False walls are built, and they CA be taken down. Ventilation, draining, etc etc……it’s all being done in ways that are respectful to the owner of the house. People set up their grows in ways that can be taken down I’m a day or two and then rebuilt…….when a landlord wants to do a walk through of the property, etc. I’ve never seen one instance of a grower putting the property or home at risk in any way.

Yeah until all the paint is coming off the walls because of the humidity and you have to repaint and of course the hardwood flooring underneath a tarp is not going to stop especially people who are irresponsibly not getting pre-approval That’s all I asked pre-approval so I can come and inspect his grow. Because I know it’s legal in Colorado right now these are from several years back but I can’t believe that there are people actually standing up for this guy. They must not own properties
