Attitudes Towards Humboldt Growers

I spend a lot of time in marijuana chat rooms. Reading them helps me keep up with attitudes towards growers. Growers of the Emerald Triangle are losing the battle for brand loyalty to Oaksterdam.  The day after 19 failed the rooms are full of comments like the one below from the mainstream Huffington post.

“Lets grab machetes and head up to Humboldt… Humboldt, your little community just pissed off a ton of people who are sick of paying your inflated crop prices!”

Growers, you need a lobbyist and an advertising company…You need to take some lessons from the corporate world or the corporate world will destroy you and the economy of this county.

A few postings on various internet rooms are not worth the sweat. They’ll pay, and they’ll like it.

Something hasn’t been sitting right with me regarding these humboldt “growers” and how they’ve surfaced since the presentation of prop. 19. Growing up, humboldt to me has always been a very happy hippy place…being worried about the price of a plant that anybody and everybody should be allowed to grow hassle free is baaaad juju, no two ways about it. People aren’t naive…a picture of a single $20,000 plant is more than most people I know make in a whole year. Now “growers” are showing off their big ass crops AND celebrating their exclusive “right’ to grow them. It stinks of greed, that’s all there is to it.

Prop. 19 sucked…good riddance…hopefully the next one will be better. Hopefully “growers’ will embrace it. If your weed is so good, what the heck are you worried about? Yeah, the anti-humboldt PR machine from oaksterdamn and friends really sucks too, but fighting fire with fire isn’t the way to go. “Humboldt” became a name without any public hoopla. “Growers” have been tricked into thinking they’ve gotta corporatize themselves to keep up. Or maybe they’re satisfying a private fantasy of becoming part of the commercial world in which we’re all born…the rock star fantasy, so to speak. Make cool labels, brand names, fancy shops and all that. Growers would do themselves best to disappear into the woods like before, they’re gonna be alright.

I don’t get it… Humboldt voted on prop. 19 about the same as the rest of Cali. 53% no. Some places on the east side were 65% No like Imperial Co. and I’ve never even heard of one dope bust down Imperial co. way. Prop 19 was defeated by really old folks, repuglicans and worried moms, NOT Humboldt growers who can now put away all the “We’re just like Napa!”, et al crap. So now we can get back to excellent sinsemilla production regardless of market pricing forces.

We have work to do, in the last week or so in Tijuana over 167 TONS of pot was taken off the market by our friends the Mexican Army!

The “Repuglicans” I know voted FOR it. But keep on with the slurs and hatred. It’ll go a long way toward getting you the sympathy and support you need.

Fiance here:

It seems to me the “growers” in Humboldt that I know all think that because they grow they are special and should be treated as royalty where ever they go. They expect everyone to cow down to them and just give them what ever they want. They think they are above the law and that the laws that the rest of us live by do not pertain to them. This is why I have a bad attitude tword them. They use the welfare system like a government subsidy for food and health care and don’t pay a dime into that system that they are sucking dry. While doing so they brag about all the things their tax free money buys them and how much tax free money they make. My attitude won’t change until their attitudes do.

jeez, humboldtkids, what do you know, two people who grow weed? They sound like the bottom of the barrel type. I have a hard time believing you otherwise. That’s not what I see among the local grower community at all…quite the opposite. I’d go so far as to say some are pretty out of touch with “everyday workin’ life”…but there’s infinitely more legitimate businesspeople who are infinitely more out of touch. Money is a worse drug than marijuana could ever be.

Humboldtkids why do you care if people abuse the welfare system? The welfare system is stupid as hell. Of course people are gonna abuse something that gifts you $150 for food, pays on your phone and light bills, free coupons to any kinna public services they got, general assistance and/or crazy/disabled checks, complimentary trips to the emergency room, free money to pay a cleaning lady, and even first crack at federal easy job stimulus programs.

Really I mean if people don’t have a job and sit around growing some weak ass crop of bammer weed plants, they should hella go on and get that free money from our stupid ass government. That’s a no effort hustle… why not?

I care because there are people out there that need the help and can’t get it becuse of people like HK’s ex, who didn’t need it got it and now we are busy repaying California for her welfare fraud. I care because that system is there to help people get back on their feet, which is help a lot of people need now but can’t get because of people like her and her friends that drive up to the welfare office in the HumVee’s and get it. I care because you DA and Department of Child Support Services turn a blind eye at best and in the worst cases support them and help them cheat the system. It cost all of us money, including you and if your too stupid and blind to see it then that’s your problem that you make our problem.

The ones I know aren’t crack heads or the bottom of the barrell, they are well liked and well supported by their friends in the growing community of Mendoboldt. They travel extensively and their children are all walking around with $300 – $500 cell phones and iPods. My stepdaughter has spent close to 10K downloading music off the internet in the past couple of years…but her mom really needed that welfare to work check, the food stamps and the health care…even though we have provided health insurance since 2005, that they refuse to use because she pays cash at the emergency room in order to hide the abuse.

Suzy doesn’t support them. If I knew them I’d tell them to their face that they are ripoff scum. I don’t understand exactly why you didn’t turn them in and take custody of the kid long ago.

we’re not paying for it one bit. We’re made to believe we’re somehow short changed by people who “abuse the system” by an abusive system…so we blame eachother instead. In the very least you should see some light in the idea that, we’re paying for it because the system is paying for ________ instead (fill in the blank). In reality, we’re just paying and paying and paying…where our dollar goes, nobody knows. Actually, it’s in plain view for all to see, and it’s not where we’d like it to go. It’s tough enough for people who desperately need social services to get them, than to treat everybody like a cheater first and thus make it more difficult to get help, all the while wrestling morality police in and out of our own minds.

Yeah, humboldtkids, I’d say they ARE the bottom of the barrel type, and they might as well be crackheads…but they don’t represent the majority at all and I think you know that. Sorry for your situation, but don’t lose sight of reality like they have.

you cant blame the price on humboldt growers when they are not the ones who set the penalties for growing weed. You may think everything is to blame on the grower when really the growers are barely making it . when the clubs are holding the wholesale price down and keeping the retial price a 40 and 50 dollars and 1/8 thats over double what the grower makes. The price problem the LA and Oakland clubs that are inflating the retail price, and 19 wouldnt have changed any of that either. They are greedy and self serving and the growers have nothing to do with that.

Yeah screw the clubs. It’s almost a flipside to what I wrote above and I agree with it completely as well. If somebody’s got a problem with how much money somebody else makes, that somebody’s got the problem, not somebody else. Marijuana is illegal, you could (will) go to prison for a long time if you’re in the wrong place at the wrong time. And who really cares if crackheads are milking the system, who’d trade lives with them?

I’ve tried and failed to explain this to a couple people. The ratio is over 1,000/1. They just see yes/no percentages (which is the same as the state, so wtf anyway?). Isn’t most of LA getting their supply from LA growers now? There’s a scattered yet focused anti-humboldt effort operating mostly anonymously on the internet. How they say in english….HELLA LAME!

…for example…the entire population of humboldt is only about 130,000…certainly less than a quarter of that are growers. All humboldt growers combined votes couldn’t change the statewide vote by a single percent if it had to.

Gosh, why am I not the least bit shocked that retail outlets mark-up 100% or as they see it — 50% margin. Dude that is what most of the world does in their stores.

Now as to wholesale price…. Most manufacturing or value added businesses (i.e. Florist) work in the 400 to 500% mark-up….so that indoor pot that costs approx $500 to $700 w/cleaning, product is really ‘worth’ about $2000-$3500 and the outdoor, grown for much less per pound, say $250 INCLUDING CLEANING, would bring in say $1200-1500, that’s wholesale of course.

Clubs in Arcata pay 2 regs, 3.2 A and up to 4 A+ grade.

Clubs in Sac pay 2.5 regs, 3.5 A and up to 4.5 A+.

Clubs in the bay pay 2.8 regs, 3.75 A and up to 4.6 A+.

Clubs in L.A. pay 3 regs, 4 A and up to 5 A+.

Now, the only reason folks like straight dealers instead of clubs is clubs wanna take your shit, sell it, and then get you the money later. If you want the money now they cut 25% off whatever the fuck the quoted you at. A dealer pays 100% now unless you are about to get robbed.
