Local Lawyers Endorse Gallegos
Press Release From Gallegos’ campaign — Legal Community Take Historic Action
In an unprecedented action today, a clear majority of Humboldt County’s private bar attorneys, joined with half of the County’s current Deputy District Attorneys and Deputy Public Defenders in publicly endorsing the sitting District Attorney for re-election. In their letter, published in Thursday’s Times-Standard newspaper, the attorneys state that “Although we are adversaries in court… Today we take the historic step of setting aside our disagreements… [to] endorse Paul Gallegos for Humboldt County district attorney.” These attorneys who identified themselves as Republicans, Democrats and Independents said that “Our justice system requires a Humboldt County district attorney …who acts independently from the police”.
This joint letter represents an historic action, as no county in Californian has every had a majority of its bar members send such a letter.

Local attorneys endorse
Paul Gallegos
Letters to the Editor

To the people of Humboldt County:
We are your deputy district attorneys, deputy public
defenders, and private attorneys. We are Democrats,
Republicans, Independents and Greens. Together
we represent the vast majority of attorneys in
Humboldt County responsible for administering our
criminal justice system. Although we are adversaries i
n court who fight to prosecute or defend our
citizens when they stand accused of crimes, we
jointly believe the Constitution requires that the
rights of all Humboldt County residents be
respected, including the rights of the victims and
the accused.
Our justice system requires a Humboldt County
district attorney who represents the people, not
special interests — who acts independently from the
police to seek justice, not vengeance, and acts with
reason, not anger. Today we take the historic step of
setting aside our disagreements in this non-
partisan race for the purpose of jointly
recommending to our community the Humboldt
County district attorney candidate who has shown
the best ability to achieve the ideals necessary for
the job. We endorse Paul Gallegos for Humboldt
County district attorney.
Signed,
Humboldt County Deputy District Attorneys:
Alan L. Dollison, Elan Firpo, Arnold L. Klein, Christa
K. McKimmy, Ben McLaughlin, Kelly Neel
Humboldt County Deputy Public Defenders:
Christina J. Allbright, Patrick M. Coughlin, Leslie J.

If you’re a defense attorney, are you not going to endorse the incumbent? You endorse the person most likely to get elected because it’s good for business.
Fiance here:
They endorse him because he goes easy on their clients. He and his office as it sits ignorse those laws they don’t feel like enforcing and turn a blind eye to the truth.

A District Attorney should be more than our county’s avenger, and even in that element of the job, the DA needs to be egalitarian and dispassionate. Gallegos is receiving endorsements and donations from a broad spectrum of our community, and his reputation statewide is excellent. Allison Jackson, on the other hand, is receiving a much smaller number of donations, very large ones, from law enforcement and special interests. And whereas Gallegos grounds his motivation on constitutional principles, Allison Jackson is focused on her tragic loss of her parents to a drunk driver. While I am very sorry for her loss, I believe this kind of emotional motivation is inappropriate for a public official charged with overseeing even-handed justice for all.

From what I understand, defense attorneys would make more money if there was an overzealous prosecutor like Ms. Jackson as the county’s DA. When cases go to trial that is expensive and time consuming which means money in the pockets of defense attorneys.
This group of endorsers are a broad spectrum of longstanding respected members from every single area of the bar. It includes Deputy District Attorneys, Civil Attorneys, Family Law Attorneys, Estate and Trust Attorneys, Bankruptcy Attorneys – literally this group represented every type of attorney from the entire Humboldt County bar.
These attorneys believed they had an obligation to the public to provide information regarding their peers’ ethics and skill levels.
