HumboldtHomegrown.com

HumboldtHomegrown.com is already taken. Garbervilleganja.com is not.  But, how much longer will cannabis themed domain names remain open?  Today’s New York Times has a wonderful article on the hot properties of marijuana based domain names.

According to the article,

…buying and selling Internet domain names can be a profitable business. The industry is estimated to be worth billions of dollars. A $13 million sale is pending for sex.com. In June, slots.com sold for $5.5 million and dating.com for $1.75 million. The New Jersey company that paid over $1 million for marijuana .com in 2004 says it has turned down five offers for more than $2 million for the domain in the last 12 months.

Thinking about registering your favorite marijuana moniker? If you want to check out if it is still available, here is Go Daddy’s site.  I better get redheadedblackbelt.com before someone else does.

Domain names are big business only if you have a single word domain (a word found in the dictionary), a common two-word phrase, or a name so closely tied to a major company that the company wants it. Simply pairing “marijuana” or “ganja” with a second word isn’t going to be worth anything at all, unless your crystal ball helps you pick the future name of a big company, and that company is so stupid as to pick its name before securing the domain name. Oh, look, I was thinking of using the name Garberville Ganja, but someone else took it. I guess I’ll call my company [insert a hundred other names that are just as good].

Or, to look at it another way, with the advent of effective search engines where you actually find what you’re looking for the first time you try, on the first page of search results, usually in the top three listings… domain names aren’t nearly as important these days, unless you have a single-word domain and massively market it. You could just as easily make up an unusual business name and find the domain name readily available. Registering more than 1,000 domain names? Count me a skeptic. I’ll laugh, if 10 years from now, I’m the guy who said nobody wants to hear actors speak.

Hi AJ,

Allow me to respectfully disagree with your take on domain names.
One word domain names are not the only way to achieve first page ranking.
It’s all about “relativity”. Your domain name (no matter how long) just has to
be keyword specific.
There is no massive marketing strategy involved; we are waaaaaaaaaay
beyond that draconian dynamic.
Live and learn.
Negativism is easy caught – positive outside the box thinkers are the successful doers.
Have a grand day!

Ahh, I wasn’t talking about domain names in reference to page rank. Google, in particular, uses a much richer formula for assessing the value of a website, such factors as… the age of the website, how many other websites link to you, how important those linking sites are, how often the website is referenced in online news reports, how often content on the website is updated, etc. There are many nuances, such as a new website garnering extensive attention from well-established websites right out of the starting game, or the opposite — a new website plugging along in obscurity, but finding slightly better credibility with Google simply because it has turned a year old (it’s called “lifting the sandbox”). If domain names were really important for page rank, Amazon would be totally screwed right now.

My reference to one-word domain names pertained to marketing. Google is so good at what it does that I don’t care whether my domains contain a keyword. My only concern is what a human thinks of the domain name when it’s heard or seen in advertising. Amazon.com has much better value in that respect than the name AmazonBooks.com would. If someone is seeking a one-word domain, I wouldn’t suggesting buying it (too expensive). Fuse two words together to make a new word. It’s frequently done in product names.

Er, and when I say fuse two words, I don’t mean simply removing the space between two words (marijuanauniverse, ganjgaworld, weedspot, etc). I don’t have any great examples, but a ways back I had a website guide to Humboldt and called it “HumGuide” instead of “HumboldtGuide.com” (someone else runs it now). Now I have a parenting website, and that name market is totally saturated, so I modified the word “Thingamabob” and made it “Thingamababy.”

Spend a couple hours with a thesaurus and there are all sorts of variations a person can come up with, and even more if you expand beyond thinking of only the keywords marijuana, ganja, weed, etc. Most won’t be terribly creative, but my point is that domain speculators can’t possibly secure every important variation of two words stuck together. There are tens of thousands (maybe more?) of possibilities for a new business owner to choose instead.

That said, I’ll admit most business owners won’t sit down with a thesaurus, and if these taken names aren’t too expensive, it may be more convenient for a proprietor to pay the asking price.

Hi Kym,
I admire your consistently well written daily postings & photos! And yes, your .com domain is available. Please secure it – you will not regret it. When you do, simply transfer everything from your WordPress account to your new domain and then you will truly “own” your own content.

At this pint, WordPress owns and has control of your content. Unfortunately, you can easily lose everything should they choose to delete your account content ( it happens all the time, even to large businesses) or sometimes their servers “just somehow lose your content”.
If you have any questions, please contact me. I’d be happy to help.

As a successful Internet Marketer, I also have invested in top level Cannabis and Marijuana related domain names for resale (at a very under-priced) amount of $420.00……for a limited time. The prices will rise dramatically after legalization is approved by vote.

My motivation has been to simply prepare for geographically recognized (Northern California) branding of Cannabis/Marijuana to allow any organized entrepreneur (farmer) to own their own online business.

California is always going to be the gold standard from a Cannabis product and a pioneering standpoint. Northern California’s pot growers should seek pacts to protect and promote potential brands like Humboldt, Mendocino, Sonoma, or Emerald Triangle.

Times have changed, Marijuana laws are changing, and the horizon is Bright!
Your reference to the New York Times article is timely and appropriate. NOW is the time to secure your domain name. Just remember to get one that is keyword specific. Be smart, do your research, or rely on someone who knows the industry.

Research indicates that the term “Cannabis” is the most searched term on a world wide basis. The term “Marijuana” ranks second in search engines.
The slang terms such as “weed”, “ganja”, “pot”, etc receive very little search engine traffic.

If you want to be at the top of your Cannabis/Marijuana marketing game, your website domain name MUST be completely “relative” to your business. So, in other words, you’ll get nowhere with using cutesy or slang names or low level search terms in your domain name.

Check out the under-priced Top Level Domain names still available (before the prices go up) at my site and get ready to roll in the…………………………………………….$$$$$$$!

Kym, I am surprised you don’t already own domain name ‘redheadedblackbelt’
go get it now, as someone will and then they will make you pay them for it!
As to WP.com owning all your stuff.. tis true. You would be much better off on a self hosted
wp.org blog. Although there would be a learning curve, and those pesky 1-click updates don’t always work, and there is the trade off.

I confess I am a bit amazed at all those who think Prop. 19 is a ‘done deal’.
Last I saw, the polls said its gonna be pretty close. And while ignorant cons and bible-thumpers thinks we are wall-to-wall libs, California does in fact have an awful lot of ‘conservative’ folks. And yes, they vote!

THEN whaddya gonna do with all those domain names?

So many big pockets have spent years playing this domain game, and its sad, because
if you want to buy a simple name for your biz, its been taken. Not being used, no. Just hoping you will be so desperate for it, that you will pay anything. Reminds me of those who buy foreclosures. Legal, yes. But you’re still a jackal, profiting from misery.
Its too bad we could not have limited the number of domains one can ‘own’.
Just sayin-

Alright ain’t nobody own any of the domain names make no mistake. Spies collect kickbacks from registration but that’s it. This is a end of the gold rush time to be in the domain trade game as hella domain names about to come up. In ’08 ICANN said oh it’s now all good to do .weed or .cannabis or whatever gets popular. Think about it like twitter if you use that. Don’t get it confused with your tweeter. On twitter you got #thissubject and #genericasssubject and whatnot. Now think about the top thousand. In ten years, domains will all be subject-specific like that. humboldt.pot and shit. Arabic and Chinese is allowed now too.
