Pot Talk–Words We Use Here
A writer was asking me for terms specific to marijuana growers in the Emerald Triangle. Here are some of the ones I’ve thought of. Got any to add?
potstitute–a negative term for a woman who likes to have relationships with wealthy growers
quad-a four wheel motorized open vehicle similar to a motorcycle often used for transportation to and from marijuana gardens
patch–outdoor marijuana garden
The Knights of Toyota–well heeled young growers often indoor
scene–where marijuana is cultivated
trimmer–one who cleans marijuana
manicurist–synonym for trimmer
Humboldt Honey–hippie chick often dressed unconventionally in cotton or hemp clothing and generally with unshaven legs and armpits
Indo –Indoor grown marijuana
diesel dope–marijuana grown off the electric grid with diesel generators
shake–waste leaves, stem, etc of trimmed pot
cabbagy–used to describe a bud that is extremely leafy and usually hard to manicure
salad–mix of different strains etc. usually less desirable
trim–the short sticky leaves removed or “trimmed” from a marijuana bud
headshop–where marijuana paraphernalia can be bought
grower–marijuana farmer
homestead–often used to indicate a small home in the hills where marijuana is often but not always grown
Camo Cowboy–usually an outdoor grower (see this CD)
marijuanaries–a high end business place much like a winery envisioned for some time in the future where different pot strains will be cultivated and processed much like grapes are now

She asked me, too, and I was surprised at how many I couldn’t come up with, given how many there are. Gonna work on the list…
Knights Of Toyota is totally ’80s-mid-’90s. Think Dukes Of Diesel now. No one with big money drives a Toyota anymore. I’ve never heard it, but I know Joni Rose wrote a song about the Knights Of Toyota for one of the Pure Schmint plays way back when. I wonder if that’s where the term came from?
I don’t have an exact definition for “hipneck,” what’s yours?

larf aka shlarf – the opposite of tops
tops – the opposite of larf aka shlarf
the switch, time to switch – plants (seedlings, clones, starts) introduced to a new light/growth cycle, usually in reference to plants in veg going to flower.
veg – marijuana plant’s initial controled growth period, no buds involved.
flower – marijuana plants final and budding cycle.
the borg – spidermites
big leafing – removing only large fan leaves to accomodate faster bud manicuring.
…uh…and more.

Awesome word collection, Kym. I always appreciate your efforts to document local culture, and in particular the documentation of the origin of words is very near and dear to my heart. I have two contributions:
“Bud-and-breakfast,” which, like marijuanaries, I have heard mentioned as a possible future business venture. You know, beautiful lodge-like location, a fire in the fireplace, lovely rooms, gorgeous plants outside intercropped with the beautiful kitchen and flower gardens, small-scale informational talks in the parlor from local growers, San Francisco tourists with some cash and curiosity…
…and…
“Budtender,” which I’ve heard used in reference the people who work behind the counter in medicinal marijuana dispensaries – although it probably has other local meanings I’m unaware of.
Fantastic post!

haha, patch kit…
I first heard the term ‘snapper’ in humboldt. A great idea I still practice. Instead of everybody passing around the same bowl in a circle, with somebody inevitably smoking ass, everybody gets their own snapper to cash. Snapper – A small nug enough for one person to get just a few worthy hits before passing an empty bowl to the next person.
Ass – the inevitable last hit off a bowl, just checking to see if anything worth smoking is left…usually not….or more often: the smashed together results of a desperate attempt to collect anything and everything still flamable stuck to or within a smoking device. The suburbs and the cities are alive with parents, teachers and children alike…all smoking ass right this very second, because they don’t have any weed.

Indo or dosia refers to indonesia. Indo refers to any out of the ordinary weed. This is strictly urban slang and originated well before indoor weed was popular. Indonesia is used in the same way as when Brits called anything exotic “Turkish.”
Friday when Ice Cube says “you say this is indo but it smell like outdo” is a play on the fact that black folks generally don’t enunciate the “oar” in words like “whore.” DJ Pooh wrote that scripts and other scripts he has made fun of the word “four” being pronounced “fo.”
“Ins” and “outs” is common distributor slang when talking about multiple pounds of indoor/outdoor.

I’d love to hear linguistic features other than lexicon that locals consider distinctive: grammar, syntax, prosody…you know, some of those features Mr. Nice puts across. A Humboldt Boontling?
there’s a relatively new documentary I believe called ‘the long haul’ or something, interviewing long haul truck drivers en route. All the typical accents are within…but during the deleted scenes they interview a driver from Arcata. Before they announced his location, I could hear a distinct difference in the voice, a sort of cross between central california blab and southern oregon drawl. There was such a familiar twang to the voice, immediately after hearing all the others, that it came to my attention even though I wasn’t thinking about how they talked at all. I don’t know what I’d dub the accent, but it’s pretty distinct.
…incidentally…in the documentary I just mentioned, the drivers who were in the business from their home local…like the guy in arcata…talked about how the national enterprises were muscling in on their turf, scaling back their pay bigtime and undermining their routes. Chalk up BIG points against widening the freeway through Richardson Grove for the sake of maintaining our local homegrown transportation businesses.

Boontling is hella cool. That area makes me wish I didn’t get flush after too much (2 glasses of) alcohol. They even called me a Bright Lighter… that made me feel so metropolitan.

Cool. Here’s one I learned on this blog: beans for cannabis seeds.
Un-Named, thanks for the film reference.

Gear: a breeder’s line of beans.
Nanner: stamen as protruding out of hermaphrodite flower buds
“I germed ten packs of Reservoir gear and none of those girls threw out any nanners”
Now that’s what I’m talking about! Nice.
