Chapter 2 (A New Humboldt Blog)

Portrait of New Blogger from her Blog

A new blogger (in Garberville, no less) has been posting delicious sounding recipes, home hints, and advocating a simpler lifestyle.  She says:

Simplifying my life is a goal I will continue to strive towards. I hope my little rant will inspire a reader to bake some bread, sew some curtains, plant a seed, or even just talk about the subject to a friend. If all corporations disappeared tomorrow what skills would you be able to offer to your family and neighbors?

…”bake some bread, sew some curtains, plant a seed, or even just talk about the subject to a friend. If all corporations disappeared tomorrow what skills would you be able to offer to your family and neighbors?”

Been there, done that. Can I select the corporations that disappear? …And politicians?

“If all corporations disappeared tomorrow what skills would you be able to offer to your family and neighbors?”

Well, sad to say, my life would end. None of my skills can be accomplished without the aid of some sort of corporation interface whether it be through the use of corporate built tools, corporate communications, corporate this and corporate that. I couldn’t play music unless I made my own instruments. But, I lack the knowledge to build my own forge for blacksmithing. My kitchen tools and cooking devices are corporate built, too. Oh, I know….
I could be the community sentry. I would keep lookout on a mountain top for when the neighboring community, who are undoubtedly more advanced than us, would came to conquer us. The, I would yell at the top of my lungs to alert the others……and then go run and hide!

Here’s a little story. During the late 1940’s, my uncle made his home near Weitchepec. Down river in Pecwan, there still lived a few of the Native American elder women who had been around since the time of the later European settlement in the area. Probably born in the 1870’s or so. My uncle grew to know them and asked them if they ever wanted to go back to the old ways. They both would have nothing to do with it. The constant struggle in search for food with hunter/gatherer subsistence living, the fighting of the elements, the worry of basic survival. As their lives changed with the advent of European influence, they saw no need to go back to the old ways. Now, they had European style homes, constant heat from European wood stoves, no longer had to use basketry for cooking, clothing was much more accessible by learning to sew in the European fashion, etc.

Much like other cultures who adapted to the modernizing of their culture, I too am gracing the corporate culture in my life. I don’t want to go back to hunting, growing my own food and medicien, sewing my own clothes, worrying about keeping enough of a wood supply to heat the home and ….curses, having 1 & 1/2 television stations to view for outside world entertainment purposes. As Ernie said, been there, done that. You’ll have to pry this television remote out of my cold, dead hands.

Now, in fairness….ya’ll can go back-to-the-land all ya want. You can visit with me at the gas station when I come in for my supply of nacho cheese. Oh wait, you won’t be needing gas. Nevermind.
