$$$ $aved When Marijuana Legalized Claims Mint.Com

Mint.com, the popular online money site chose today, 4/20,  to unroll its figures on how marijuana legalization would parse out financially for California.

What the study doesn’t take into account is that the amount brought in from taxation would surely be impacted by dropping prices.  However, to counterbalance that concern is the fact that apparently the site counts marijuana as a contributor to lung cancer when, in fact, use of cannabis may provide a slight protective effect. The May 26th, 2006 issue of the Washington Post states:

The largest study of its kind has unexpectedly concluded that smoking marijuana, even regularly and heavily, does not lead to lung cancer.

The new findings “were against our expectations,” said Donald Tashkin of the University of California at Los Angeles, a pulmonologist who has studied marijuana for 30 years.

“We hypothesized that there would be a positive association between marijuana use and lung cancer, and that the association would be more positive with heavier use,” he said. “What we found instead was no association at all, and even a suggestion of some protective effect.”

Thanks to Jen Savage for pointing out the link.

kym, what im about to post has nothing to do with this entry, so i apologize for that.

but i feel i had to tell you that i had the wonderful opportunity of meeting Eric Sligh today at the denver 420 rally!!

i was wearing my humboldt hoody, and walked up to his grow booth to say hello, and tell him what an awesome magazine i think it is. before i could say anything he had already commented on my sweatshirt. : )

then i mentioned that i read your blog, and we both agreed that its the best in humboldt county!

anyways i just thought it was really funny that i had my own little taste of humboldt right here in denver on 420. i got Erics business card along with Alex’s after talk of reading your blog 🙂

im hoping they were serious when they said to call them!

happy holidays!

T,
Eric is a nice guy. (And my niece thinks he’s a sex symbol.) I’m glad you got to meet him. He’s one of the new celebrities of the marijuana world. I love the magazine but then I’m prejudiced;>

I am a little incredulous to find this info about smoking cannibus in relation to lung cancer.

It seemed smart to me, to find different ways to injest one’s herb, other than smoking it. Common sense dictates that smoke of any kind, inhaled into one’s lungs, would be destructive to lung tissue and cells. I will read this link carefully.

I have worked in the “health care” field for over 20 years, as a massage therapist. Given all of the hidden aspects of cannibus use, I wonder how a study can be reliable. It doesn’t seem that it is possible to know the long-term effects of smoking/ or eating the drug. Perhaps one can conduct a personal survey: look around us. Do the “old hippies” exude a strenghth and vitality that will carry them into their 80’s and 90’s? Will/does their keen intellect as elders bring wisdom and peaceful integrity to their communities and families?

Of course, that is a tall order for anyone. Aging is not for the weak-kneed. Accepting Life on its terms is a challenge.

It is a profound challenge to consider the long term health issues around marijuana usage, to look at it with objectivity, without defensiveness or self-serving excuses.

I think I’ve finally put my finger on why this bill bothers me.
It’s like extortion. First they come in and terrorize you. Lock you up for smoking, take your money in fines and lawyer fees, kick in your door and scare your children. Then a nice man in a suit comes along and says
“Hey, this can all end, if you just give me a cut of everything.”
What I want them to say is
“I’m sorry, It was wrong of us to do that. You folks go on with your lives & we won’t bother you anymore.”
But I have a feeling I’m going to go on wanting, for a very long time.

Laura,
I think that I still an uncomfortable with this too. But I have heard study after study citing that marijuana (especially that high in CBD’s) inhibits cancer–even lung cancer.

It’s interesting that the automaticly generated related sources mentioned my column as one of two sources to read.

I guess a lot of people must have read it, which makes me happy.Thanks.

yes and yes, but i don’t see how that has anything to do with whether or not pot causes cancer. I tend to give more credence to the results of ‘study after study’ that Kym tells us of over the opinion of one massage therapist.

Aging is not for the weak-kneed

-never heard of anyone who died from ‘weak knees’, and again –what does that have to do with marijuana causing cancer?

here’s to yr health (blazing a fatty)

Fiance here:

So is what you are saying is that when I work and pay taxes that I am being extorted? Or are you saying that since you all grow pot for a living that you are special and shouldn’t have to pay taxes? I’m not really sure? It is my taxes and other people like me who work for a living and pay taxes that pays for your welfare, your roads, your schools and everything else that you use that OUR TAXES pay for. You want all the benefits of those taxes, you want police protection when you get ripped off, you would all be screaming if the feds took away your welfare, you woud all be screaming if you highways went to shit., you are all screaming about not having the funding you need for your kids to be able to take several week long field trips a year and you don’t want to pay to fix their schools or pay for their teachers. Give me a freaking break! It makes me sick when I read some of this bs.

Fiance,
Settle down, and take a deep breath.
I was talking about pot smokers. You know the guys you see getting chased, tackled, and tazed on COPS for having $10 worth of weed?
If some one is under threat of physical or financial harm & you tell them you’ll take away that threat, but only if they give you money, that is extortion. The new bill offers pot smokers a chance to be free of that threat, if they give the government money every time they pay for pot.
I don’t have anything against paying taxes to my government for services it provides. It provides no service to marijuana consumers. There is no county or state body that regulates the quality. There is no governing group that assures them that the product is free of dangerous chemicals. I have no doubt that in time there will be, but what they want right now is a tax for no service. Another chunk of cash from California’s citizens to be thrown into the gaping maw of their poor budgeting skills. Then when they decide to form some kind of FDA for pot they’ll be back with their hand out again.
Nearly everyone pays taxes. The IRS, the state, the county, all expect their forms filled out and their checks mailed in or they come looking for you. I can’t vouch for how honest individual people are when they fill out those forms, taxpayers from every walk of life have been known to fib a little, but I do know that if you own a home you’d better claim enough income to explain it.
So please, don’t yell at me about your taxes.
I don’t expect the police to do anything for me. I remember when a local business was broken into the officer stopped by and took some notes. When he was told that nothing had been touched by the employees that morning he replied “Lady, this ain’t CSI I’m gonna fill out a report.”
I notice you mention Welfare twice. I get the feeling you have a lot of hostility around that subject. I’m not on welfare & I don’t know anyone who is, but I don’t mind if some of my tax dollars are used to help people when they are in need.
You’ve had a bad experience with one woman & the court system & you are angry. I get that, but please stop making generalizations about everyone here.
What happened to you is terrible but I didn’t do it, “we” didn’t do it. There is no giant conspiracy in Humboldt to keep that girl from you. If I knew who her Mother was I would tell her she’s hurting the girl by not encouraging a healthy relationship with her Father.
I sympathized with you initially, feeling your pain. As your fiance was obviously fighting for time with a child he loves. I’m a parent and the thought of having a child pulled away like that hurts my heart, but your overwhelming hostility & the way you paint us all with the same brush is making it hard to feel for you.

Well Kim….I don’t paing everyone there but I know more than one person that is growing and making tons of money and is on welfare. We are still paying the state of California for my fiances ex and will be until the child is at least 20. I mention it because DCSS and the courts and the mediators and the DA are all protecting the mother and so are many of her friends there in SoHum. I have been there and talked to them all.

If you smoke cigarettes you pay taxes on them, if you drink alcohol you pay taxes on it, there is literally nothing that you do that you don’t pay taxes on, why should cannibis be any different? Almost everyone I know that is involved with the ex takes their illegally earned money and spends the bulk of it anyhwere but Humboldt. I know that most of my stepdaughters clothes are bought either on line or in Portland or San Francisco…they take serious shopping trips to these places as do their friends. They are no supporting you community by doing so. Almost all of their major purchases are bought else where.

Personally I support legalization, I haven’t read the bill but it is going to be taxed if it sold in stores no matter what. Farmers all across this nation that grow anything pay taxes.

I don’t put everyone up there all in the same category and never have. I know there are good people up there that don’t do the things I am bitching about but there are plenty that do and your community turns a blind eye. They support the ex no matter what and they support others that do the same bs things that she does because the have to. They have to to protect themselves and their livlihood. I have heard through this blog that you guys “police” yourselves. You don’t do a very good job at it! It is not anyone in that communities business to police our situation but many seem to think that it is. Our custody situation is none of their business but they make it so because they “work” with the mother in question and for some reason her friends think that they have more of a right to be with his daughter than he does. They all think that because her mother took her there illegally when she was 6 that she now belongs more to them than her own father and they support the childs supposed right to drink, get high and harvest their crops, starting when she was about 12. None of that is apparently supposed to be any of our business because she lives in Humboldt and her mother grows. They are policing themselves and apparently us. I still get threats at work from her mothers friends and yes we are angry.

We get angrier every time we read about how special that the growers there think they are and how none of the rules of regular society apply to them because they are special because they grow an illegal cash crop hidden behing the quise of a “medicine.”

I am a medical patient. I am pro legalization. I do no condone children smoking pot, drinking or harvesting their parents crops. I do not condone you community protecting a woman who has kidnapped and hidden her child from her father twice.

You probably do know her mother, you probably have heard some bs story from her just like the one she tells the courts and everyone else. From what I hear she is “well liked’ in your community and because of this she has many pulling strings for her.

This post wasn’t about any of that. It was about you writing about extortion. Paying taxes is not extortion it is what keeps this country going. It was about what you wrote about the new bill. To me any progressive steps tword legalization are better than none at all. If you want it legalized then you have to deal with what comes with that….taxation is one of those things.

It sounds like cannabis contains a whole slew of beneficial organic compounds, but the act of inhaling smoke – of any kind – is inherently damaging to the lungs. The two probably offset each other in some ways.

Here’s a link to a recent article discussing the matter, suggesting that recent claims of health benefits might be inflated.

http://www.sciencedaily.com/releases/2009/08/090805110741.htm

The central finding in this study is that “marijuana smoke caused significantly more damage to cells and DNA than tobacco smoke…However, tobacco smoke caused chromosome damage while marijuana did not.””

I recommend vaporizing.

Common sense dictates that smoke of any kind, inhaled into one’s lungs, would be destructive to lung tissue

Smoking pot is not bad for you. It causes phlegm but is non-toxic.

Check this study:
http://www.erj.ersjournals.com/cgi/content/abstract/35/1/42

“Cannabis appears to have different effects on lung function from those of tobacco. Cannabis use was associated with higher lung volumes, suggesting hyperinflation and increased large-airways resistance, but there was little evidence for airflow obstruction or impairment of gas transfer.”

Wood smoke inhalation is indeed bad for you

Check this wood smoke study:
http://erj.ersjournals.com/cgi/content/abstract/27/3/542

Not all smoke is bad for you. Some smoke is much worse than others. This is basic knowledge and dictated by common sense.

A good reply to an angry man.

However, I may need another cup of coffee because I didn’t pick up the part where the writer said anything about a “bad experience with a woman and the courts.”
I re-read the post several times. This might just be an example of me being really dense this morning.

Still puzzled though.
