Ernie, I couldn’t find it under your name so I searched around and the “common” names are Mission Bells or Checker Lily. So your name was “correct” basically. The scientific name is Fritillaria affinis which is kind of pretty.
It makes sense that it wouldn’t be called the Mendocino Mission Bell, because Mendocino didn’t have missions. But if the Mendocino forest floor was a sanctuary, wouldn’t it be great to have a mission bell like that one.
I put a picture of a white poppy on my blog for you.

I had these and mountain trilliums blooming at the same time in my yard at the “swamp”.
I really like the lighting effect there it reminds me of old black and white movies that put a light on the film subject’s eyes to make that part of a character’s face stand out.

We used to call that a “Brown Bell Lillie” otherwise known as the “Mendocino Mission Bell Lillie”. But I know that I’m wrong…
Like the old Mervyn’s commercial said, “Open, open, open!” Very graceful and I love the black background. Makes it look so dramatic.
