Update for those interested in the Youth Alive! community movement here in Southern Humboldt.

Struggling to reduce the large numbers of young people dying in our rural county, on March 26th, some activists gathered ideas to encourage youth involvement in multiple kinds of outdoor fun.  Out of the meeting came a mission statement for their group.

“We wish to promote fun, physical, outdoor activities and provide healthy opportunities for youth to connect with each other, their local world and positive role models from the community.”

The group plans to encourage hikes, bikes, and more for the under 21 crowd. According to an email from the group, hopes are to “incorporate multiple interests: rock-climbing, surfing, photography,… etc. to attract a broad spectrum of participants.” Youth from all over the community will be welcome.

Information about specific events will be announced via “posters around the high school, through ASB announcements, spreading the word through the Earth Club or other interested student groups, email and notices in the calendar listing of local papers and radio.”

Thanks, I really liked the way the background came out so soft while the geese came out relatively sharply. It reminds me of an old illustration in a sportsman’s magazine.

Different backgrounds, yours is soft and green while mine is brown and harsh, yet the composition is eerily similar

Great shot, the blurring seems to add a little mystique.

There sure are tons of things to do outdoors, but if you let TV lead your life you won’t run into many of them.

I agree with you Kym, the photo does remind me of something from a sports magazine.

Great idea to offer all these activities to the youth. Hope it works out really well, and mostly I hope it saves lives!

Seven of us took an hour-long hike through the redwoods after school today; we were surprised by the early blooming flowers: calypso orchids, trillium (white, crimson and pink!), yellow violets and carpets of sorrel. Members of the track team overlapped with us, but we kept a brisk pace. Same time next week, and bike rides on Tuesdays. We’re planning longer, multi-day adventures for later in the spring and maybe a week-long camp-out this summer. Hope more kids will “flock” to this program!

I’m jealous! Catching them in flight can be so difficult, and I have never succeeded in capturing a clear image. One of these days….
