My friend, an art teacher, claims that those blue flowers are the universal favorites of all males. Around here they are often used as landscaping around malls. Most of the year they are a bit bland but, now in August, they come into their own with cool yet intense blue flowers spraying off of tall stalks. I’ve been contemplating getting some for my own garden but I can’t remember what they are called.
Carol, Thanks for the link and yes, I meant males/ men/ masculine personages. I’ve noticed the phenomena myself. Ask men what flowers they want to plant and they often take a stab at describing these Agapanthus.
……and talking about men and flowers, I just obtained a huge orange pot from a garden store on the square in Arcadia. I want to plant seasonal flowers in it within the next few weeks, but I’m from L.A. and I haven’t figured out what grows when here.
I’d appreciate some suggestions about what to plant now (and a good source for the plants).
Yes, I too love blue. My car is blue, my eyes are blue, Ruby’s eyes are blue. I really did love those red dahlias I saw yesterday at the Henderson Center’s farmers market, though.
Joe, Welcome. I hope you and Ruby love Eureka. Pierson’s on the south end of Broadway as you are leaving town is one of my favorite garden shops in that town. Shafer’s in Henderson Center is another. It is on Henderson st.
I don’t live in there though. I live in So. Hum which is much hotter so I’m not familiar with the plants that do well there. Fuchisas, Rhododendons, azaleas, and Princess Trees look wonderful in your area all year round but I’m not sure what a great late summer plant is but I’ll bet the workers at either Pierson’s or Shafer’s can help.
Well, I’ll throw one in here for Joe. There’s a bedding and potting plant called Lobelia ernus (Crystal Palace, and Oxford Blue are names of some) that produces masses of small bright blue flowers that could look great in an orange pot.

What wonderful colors!
Another really good photo.
Wow! Just gorgeous! Did you enter any of your photos in the Humboldt County Fair?
Thank you and no, I chickened out on entering my photos.
Not only is it a lovely butterfly, but the flowers are splendid too!

Sorry, that’s Lobelia *erinus.
I love Lobelia. My mother has a couple in some hanging planters that are beautiful.
A Western Tiger Swallowtail, Papilio rutulus.
Beautiful, Kym.
Another absolutely wonderful photograph. And there are also white flowering agapanthii 🙂
Now….now…I really prefer marigolds!
