Federal Officers still in Eureka as of Monday
Hanging Around
As of this Monday, July 21st, Federal officers were still being seen around the county. Apparently returning from business in the hinterlands, three officers in two vehicles were seen at the Chevron in Eureka around 5:30 pm. One bronze sedan and one dark SUV both with non official plates were gassing up covered with the patina of dust that usually indicates dirt road driving. The agents were not shy about their business. They were all wearing t-shirts emblazoned with the title “Federal officer,” camouflage pants and were carrying side arms. One even had two handguns—both in front and in back.

How ever in the world do you find time to know what’s going on, blog about it, raise kids and take pictures of all this wildlife? I am as green as froggy down below.
1) I don’t sleep enough!
2) I do lots of things but none really well.
3) I have a wonderful husband who has a wonderful job so I don’t have to work outside the home.
I beg to differ. You do the photography thing very well.
Yes, you certainly do the photography thing well!
Picking over dead carrion or looking for live meat?
I think the vulture is looking right at you! Be careful! You don’t want to be live meat!
When I have used fish emulsion in the garden, the turkey vultures circle the place for several days after I fertilize.
Kym, you are a most excellent and a-musing being. Journalist, poet, photographer, mother, teacher, virtual friend. The personnel department needs to upgrade your classification, and with it a sweet salary review.
“Calif condors’ animal instinct takes over in fire”
July 17, 2008
‘BIG SUR, Calif. (AP) — As wildfire whipped toward a remote sanctuary of the endangered California condor last month, the rare birds got their biggest test in survival after years of pampering by biologists: They had to live completely on their own.
Forced away by flames, their scientist handlers could only hope the birds’ animal instincts would kick in. To their delight, they did.
The birds found fresh air, and food: a beached whale and decaying California sea lion at the edge of Big Sur’s cliffs. After the blaze swept through the area, many even returned home.
“It’s incredible. They did just what they’re supposed to do,” said Kelly Sorenson, executive director of the Ventana Wildlife Society, which runs the sanctuary. “I was honestly thinking we’d lose four to six birds. You can rebuild pens, but we only have a limited amount of time to restore a species.”
All told, biologists have tentatively accounted for all but two birds: a chick that had been in a nest high in a redwood tree and another older condor that was released into the wild two years ago.
Last week, Sorenson and Burnett returned to the burned-out sanctuary and hiked to the edge of the feeding site. At the top of a charred Ponderosa pine the alpha male of the group surveyed his blackened canyon.
Burnett pumped his fist.
“They survived on their own without us,” Sorenson said. “It shows us they can do it.”
Elaine,
What you don’t know is she is also a fantastic daughter and daughter in law. She makes a point every single week of spending quality time, with her parents and her inlaws. This time includes helping with whatever needs doing, just chatting or giving encouragement whenever needed. She gets up at 5 every morning to get her husband off to work and her teenagers off to school, she home schools her little guy, keeps a lovely garden, goes to martial arts a couple times a week, etc. etc. She is currently organizing a fund raiser for a local family. I could continue the list but I think this gives you a pretty good idea of why every day I am happy that she is my daughter.
Aw shucks, Thanks. You forget the part where I eat too much junk food, forget appointments and yell at my kids but I like your version better.
