The Lusty Lady
Although tales of hollow voices where no one walks and cold fingers trailing up the spine when no one is behind you send goose bumps racing, not all ghosts are scary. Some apparently have another purpose. In the small hamlet of Phillipsville, just up the road from the old Sawblade Tavern and down the road from the Deer Horn Lodge is a ramshackle but charming old building, The Riverwood Inn. The downstairs is a wonderful country neighborhood bar connected to a tiny restaurant that serves delicious Mexican food.
Upstairs used to be empty most of the time. The current owner made the area into lovely rooms. She claims that a male traveler stayed behind as a ghost but I heard that a woman walks up there. I was told you can hear her husky laughter and teasing voice. No one is scared of her. However,I’ve heard that a woman and man better really like each other before they head upstairs alone. They say that the place used to be a brothel and the ghost, a madam there.
I don’t know whether it’s true but. . .Once my husband and I slipped upstairs together. All by our lonesome. He’s pretty urgent about going back.

Hmm….interesting.
Sounds like they might have a succubus on their hands. I better investigate just to make sure.
Now you know a nice country inn to take your wife;>

I’ll certainly add it to potential honeymoon spots.

Better save it till after you’ve been married awhile. Your honeymoon could probably take place wherever is cheap and close without losing too much in the excitement area.

Not a bad idea…but where’s the romance in that?

I don’t know. My husband and I still haven’t been on a honeymoon (unless you count the trip to Europe with 3 boys in tiny RV) but I’m not complaining, I get plenty of romance.

True. A fancy honeymoon does not romance make. I stand corrected.

I thought cheap and close was romantic?! Just foolin’ but I will definitely share news of these rooms to my better half….it’s almost Saturday.

LOL! Great story!
LOL! Great story!
I sent a link for your blog to the owner of the Riverwood Inn. I’m curious to see if she has any input on the Lusty Lady. 🙂
There’s a story of a ghost in my parents’ house, but I’ve never seen it. Just my youngest sister and dad have, I think. I wish I knew the history of that house… might be interesting.

I’m curious if she has heard the Madam story. I’d never heard the male traveler ghost story before I read their site. Let me know what she says.

OK! I confess! I am the proud owner of the Riverwood Inn. Corrections are in order. My rooms are downstairs, below the bar, dance floor and restaurant. The dance floor still has cleat marks from the gang that used to hang when the Avenue of the Giants, which the Riverwood is located on, was the original Highway 101. They were called loggers. The Riverwood has been around since about 1934. Anyway, I figured out some trivia for everyone. I have actually waxed the floors in the Riverwood each week for 13 years bringing the total wax jobs to 676 times. Bathroom cleaning comes in around 14,235 over the past 13 years. That’s a lot of time alone in this wonderful, old, creaky and fun building. Sometimes I feel like I’m definately NOT alone. One time when I was leaving after a night of bartending, I locked up and went out to my car. As I was backing out, I looked up and saw a light on in the attic. Not good to leave on a light in an old building like that, so I went back in, unlocked the padlock to the upstairs, went up and turned off the light,. Went back down, padlocked the door, went out through the bar and locked the door again, got in my car and started backing out…….well, the light was back on. I figured the damn ghost could sit up there all night for all I cared, I was going home!!! A few months back I had a couple staying in one of our rooms. He was downstairs taking an afternoon nap and she was upstairs enjoying conversation and such. He said that he woke to feel someone laying next to him but when he reached over, no one was there. Now, there could be other reasons for that, for sure! But the one thing that I do know is that there is definately a presence at the Riverwood Inn and that is good vibes, good times and most of all, good customers! Whatever caused the ghost to remain wasn’t evil or bad. He is most likely, the terror of Highway101! Song? Bear with me. This song was written on placemats at the old cafe at French’s Camp back in the 50’s. That’s where I first learned the words. I would love to have a copy of that placemat! Anyway…………
He wore black leather trousers and motorcycle boots……
And a black leather jacket with an eagle on the back….
He had a motorcycle that took off like the gun……
That fool was the terror of Highway 101!
Oh, he never washed his face and he never combed his hair……….
He had axel grease imbedded underneath his fingernails……….
On the muscle of his arm was a big tattoo………
A picture of a heart saying “Mother I Love You”………
Oh, he had a little girl by the name of MaryLou…….
And he treated her just like, he treated all the rest…….
But everbody pittied her cause everybody knew……
She loved that goddam motorcycle man………
Chorus……..motorcycle boots and all that…..
MaryLou poor girl she pleaded and she begged him not to leave…….
He said I’ll ride a hundred miles before the sun can rise…….
But he hit a disal engine that was California bound……..
And when they cleared the records, all they found, was……
Black leather trousers and motorcycle boots……..
And a black leather jacket with an eagle on the back……
But they never found the cycle that took off like the gun…….
AND THEY NEVER FOUND THE TERROR OF HIGHWAY 101.!
So, I think my ghost is a naked, tattooed old biker! Goodnight!

To the owner of the Inn … you song was written by Gerry Lieber and Mike Stoller – and recorded by a group that included a guy that then became a game show host – Burt Convey? – maybe. Can’t remember. but it was also sung by Edith Piaf – in French – and is on her live at the Olympia in Paris recording. I learned the song years before I knew the song writers – and it was one of my favorites – remembered the words for years – for no apparent reason. Then I met the composers much later in life … one of those cosmic giggles.
