I put a comment on my blog this morning, only to come back this afternoon and discover that it wasn’t there. Huh???

It was glitchy for awhile, they used to have alot of those problems when I first got started, but it has been remarkably stable for along time.

It’s really phenomenal when you think about how MANY blogs they host, all for free. We get to upload photos, text, videos, it’s astounding really.

And if you spend a little time watching bloggerplay, as the photos that are being, uploaded flit across the screen in real time, you see people from all over the world posting photos of their families, their weddings, their babies, their pets, and their vacations, you realize the common bonds we all share, it’s a beautiful thing really.

Boy wrote, “WordPress here I come.”.

Calm down. Just about every web site goes down for a while at some time or another.

I couldn’t get in either, for a while, but after an hour or so it was back up.

What had me going was what happened to some of the other blogs. I mentioned them on my blog earlier on:

At least two blogs I frequent had their domains “sniped”, meaning someone waited for their domain names to expire and then snagged the domain. Except in one case, the domain service held on to it for the owner.

In the other case, ilanamercer.com (note these were blogs where people had domains leading to them), apparently she bought it from some company which didn’t provide expiration protections.

It’s been three days now, I believe, and it looks like she might have been shut down for good. The first day it was just some generic links page as you often see when domains are sniped. Now, it’s just a Server Not Found page. Ilana is probably like me and won’t pay the ransom to get her domain back. http://blog.ilanamercer.com/

What does this have to do with the blogspot outage? Well, I was getting the same kind of message when I tried to get into my blogspot page during the outage. I couldn’t help but wonder if Blogspot forgot to renew their domain and somebody sniped it?

Turned out it was just an outage, but think about it: What kind of mess would it be if the folks at Blogspot didn’t renew their domain and someone snagged it? You’d have thousands, probably hundreds of thousands of blogs shut down with no way to tell your usual visitors what happened.

As an aside, I just noticed: If you’re using the Firefox browser (don’t know if Internet Explorer gives previews) put your mouse on the link for ilanamercer.com. My browser shows a preview of the blog page in a window that opens. If you click on the link, though, you still get the Server Not Found message. The preview must be from a cached page somewhere, I guess.

Today everything appears fine to me. But I’m noticing this post is still getting quite a few hits so perhaps all is not well.
