Humor Fail

The following was sent to me as a joke.

I have a terrible sense of humor that overcomes my better judgment.  I snicker at very un PC stories. I understand a warped perspective. I know the woman who sent it to me didn’t mean harm.  I know I laugh at other jokes that horrify other people.

Yet, I find it hard to see how anyone could find this funny.

A woman goes to the doctor, beaten black and Blue.

Doctor: “What happened?”

Woman: “Doctor, I don’t know what to do
. Every time my husband comes home drunk he beats me to a pulp.”

Doctor: “I have a real good medicine for that. When your husband comes home drunk, just take a glass of sweet tea and start swishing it in your mouth.  Just swish and swish but don’t swallow until he goes to bed and is a sleep.”

Two weeks later the woman comes back to the doctor looking fresh and reborn.

Woman: “Doctor, that was a brilliant idea! Every time my husband came home drunk, I swished with sweet tea.   I swished and swished, and he didn’t touch me!”

Doctor: “You see how much keeping your mouth shut helps?”

Ok, I laughed. Come on Kym, I bet you chuckled too. While I don’t think a woman should ever be hit I do think that all of us women and men could learn to keep our mouths shut sometimes.

tj,
I didn’t even smirk. I agree we could all learn to keep our mouth shut but domestic violence just makes me ill.

Not one bit funny. At all. Ever. Silencing women has been in fashion for millenia. I say, “ROAR!!!”

I’m not touching this one with a ten-foot pole!

I haven’t been married for 36 years without learning a few things.
Not the least of my lessons, was learning when to keep my mouth shut…no matter how funny something might seem at the moment. I learned to look in her direction for a signal before laughing!

There you have it. One of the secrets for a long marriage. Knowing your partner’s Green Light and Red Light signs. Humor really helps.

What bothers me more than the stupid notion that abuse is amusing is that people are still flogging the notion of “yappy wife” as a hilarious joke. It was a tired gag in the 1950s. If you’re going to try and write some “relationship humor” at least try to find something new to say about it.

The design of the logo is beautiful. Though I think you are wrong about Facebook not allowing pages entitled Marijuana see http://www.facebook.com/#!/search/?init=srp&sfxp=&q=marijuana

It’s not funny because it reflects a serious attitude. It’s not an Archie Bunker double-meaning type of irony. And it’s scary.

Boy, I guess I am the humor impaired one at chuckling at this story. I think it might be because I have absolutely no domestic violence experience; none in either of our families as far back as anyone can remember, none in friends either. I certainly wasn’t laughing at the very real abuse some people face, maybe my laughter is even made worse since I have never faced it. Sorry if I offended anyone.

tj,
I am always sniggering at things that horrify my friends (and sometimes myself) so no worries. I know how kind you are.
