Humboldt Bay firefighters rushed to the scene following reports of the incident, which sent a large, black plume of smoke into the sky.

The Incident Commander is warning all incoming emergency vehicles to be careful because of the condition of the roadway.

Following the crash, weather conditions have gotten worse with snow beginning to stick on the highway, according to the California Highway Patrol (CHP) Traffic Incident Information Page.

“[C]rews will use a helicopter to install cable net drapery along with rockfall catchment systems,” Caltrans reports.

According to first reports over the scanner, the three occupants in the car have moderate to major injuries.

“I was woken up by everyone in the neighborhood yelling outside.”
