The trouble with the old vans is that there are a lot of fuel related parts waaay towards the back of the engine compartment where nobody can really see them until they are on fire. One of those “Out of sight, out of mind” things. Seen a lot of them go up over rotten fuel lines.

And the engines are made of magnesium which is alot harder to put out with water.

No. You are 100% wrong about that. VW Vanagons (and bay window and split window vans) never had magnesium engines.

Only the VW Beetle and the VW Super Beetle both had magnesium engine blocks (AS21 and AS41, respectively).

A $20 fire extinguisher could save your car, or stop a major wildfire from starting in the dry season. if you don’t have one already, I suggest getting one for your vehicle before ending up in the news.

Just happy they were able to get out of the van safely. That could have had a tragic ending.

Great. Now these “unlucky” souls are trapped in shitville with no wheels to travel. This will get real interesting-fast.

Volkswagen Van: On odd machine, easily destroyed, lacking adequate power and braking, with a propensity for fires, brake failure, explosion, extreme injury and sudden death of the owners from rollover, crashes and toxic exhaust. Known to spew pollution and block uphill roadways.

If ever a poor quality and unsafe product should have been banned from the market, it was the Volkswagen line of cars produced in Germany and sold in the USA from 1951 through 1979 or so…

Volkswagen continues to produce awful vehicles to this day, and is one of the largest manufacturers of motor vehicles in the world. Most of their cars suck, including Audis…

Only Subaru produces worse cars…

Well, you are known for your intellect and good choices…

If you can find a running Yugo, buy it! As for Renault, well, it’s French… Enough said…

Volkswagen cars are horrible, but I did have a ’63 Karmen Bug, and I had a deeply custom 1962 – 27 window bus that would do wheelies, back in the 70’s. Kept that convertible for 12 years and sold it for 3X what I paid for it.

I wouldn’t even sit in an old VW, and they should all be crushed! So should every Subaru ever built.
