About 12:52 p.m., Cal Fire’s Fortuna Emergency Command Center dispatched a wildland response after getting a report of a loader on fire with flames spreading into the vegetation in the Johnson Road area between Orick and Mettah.

As of 1:30 p.m., the Johnson Fire is 3.5 acres in size, according to Jeremy Ward, Fire Captain Specialist. “We have aircraft and one battalion chief at scene,” he told us. “And a considerable amount of other equipment on its way.”

He asked everyone to be sure to be really fire safe during this time. “We did get some resources back, but we have hot dry weather picking up,” he warned.

UPDATE 5:10 p.m.: As of 3 p.m. the fire had grown to 7 or 8 acres, Jeremy Ward told us. He hasn’t gotten a more updated acreage at this time. However, Cal Fire added aircraft, water tankers, other fire engines, logistical supplies and a dozer to this fire.

He wants to remind everyone of the hazardous hot, dry weather and request everyone be as cautious as possible.

UPDATE 8 p.m.: According to Jeremy Ward, the Johnson Fire is now contained at 9.5 acres. He did warn though, “We are going to have considerable amount of resources at the fire over the next few days.” The resources will have to work through thick vegetation to ensure that the fire is completely put out.

As of right now (4:15pm) there 5 in-bound Calfire aircraft, and one already on it. Earlier there was a helicopter as well. There is already heat showing on the satellite.

the good news is that there are, (if mapping is right), three clearcuts upslope from the fire, and tying into those should help with the south and east sections of the fire. But that is just trying to correspond the given location of the fire with google maps of the area. I don’t know the area first hand.
