This is a press release from the Humboldt County Sheriff’s Office. The information has not been proven in a court of law and any individuals described should be presumed innocent until proven guilty:

A McKinleyville man has been taken into custody peacefully following a Humboldt County SWAT response.

On August 10, 2020, at about 6 p.m., the Humboldt County Sheriff’s Office Emergency Communications Center received a 911 call regarding shots fired into a residence on the 2000 block of Thiel Avenue in McKinleyville.

The suspect, later identified as 39-year-old Ryan Gordon Shaw, reportedly began shooting toward a neighbor’s residence from within his own home. At least one bullet reportedly entered the neighbor’s residence.

Sheriff’s deputies arrived on scene and extricated the neighbor to safety. During this time, Shaw continued firing numerous shots from his residence, becoming verbally aggressive toward deputies. Humboldt County SWAT, the Humboldt County Crisis Negotiation Team and Humboldt County Mental Health responded to the scene to begin negotiations with Shaw.

Shaw continued firing from within his residence for the duration of the incident. Just before 8:30 p.m., Humboldt County SWAT deputies conducted a tactical operation utilizing the Humboldt County Sheriff’s Office Bearcat armored vehicle, to negotiate with Shaw for a peaceful surrender. Deputies were successful with their negotiation and Shaw was taken into custody peacefully.

No one was injured during this incident.

Shaw is being booked into the Humboldt County Correctional Facility on charges related to this incident.

More information will be released when available and appropriate.

The Humboldt County Sheriff’s Office would like to thank the California Highway Patrol, Arcata Fire, the Humboldt County Crisis Negotiation Team and Humboldt County Mental Health for their assistance with this incident.

I support law enforcement as servants of the People. I do not support law enforcement as an extension of the military.

https://www.rutherford.org/publications_resources/john_whiteheads_commentary/p_is_for_predator_state_the_building_blocks_of_tyranny_from_a_to_z

“Set against a backdrop of government surveillance, militarized federal police, SWAT team raids, asset forfeiture, overcriminalization, armed surveillance drones, whole body scanners, stop and frisk searches, and the like—all of which have been sanctioned by Congress, the White House and the courts—our constitutional freedoms are being steadily chipped away at, undermined, eroded, whittled down, and generally discarded.

As a result, the American people have been treated like enemy combatants, to be spied on, tracked, scanned, frisked, searched, subjected to all manner of intrusions, intimidated, invaded, raided, manhandled, censored, silenced, shot at, locked up, and denied due process.”

Cool

They were wearing green and had a F550 with some bulletproof panels on it

Not like they dropped an atom bomb on the neighborhood from their federal surplus B2

But keep on “supporting law enforcement”… with supporters like you, who needs detractors!!??

I have no issue with this police action specifically, but the evolution from your friendly neighborhood police man to a tactical military unit is stark. I know many in law enforcement including family. I have a lot of respect for people willing to put up with the shit of humanity day in and day out, but the creation of paramilitary units within small town America runs counter to securing our liberties. With enough military training anybody in the community becomes adversary rather than community member.

Servants of the people is not the same as being a servant to the part of the people that abuse the rest of the people. If the sight of body armor and high tech surveillance is how you define abusive, militarized police, then what you advocate is really ineffective police who are required to put themselves in danger because they look scary. This man was shooting at people. If the cops show up in a bullet resistant vehicle with body armor, good for them. They are not required to pussyfoot around.

Can police become abusive? Of course. But this is not such a case so why should their appearance be so offensive? Militarized police has become an accusation that is a sort of half truth. A military not only makes war on opponents but it can be used as an organized way to protect too. It tends to depend on which side of their lines you are standing whether you feel their power is an abuse or protection. The deciding line is like no-knock warrants- something that has been abused to the point it puts the public on the wrong side of the line almost automatically. In this case, the police are on the right side of the line.

Read my reply above. No issues with this particular operation, I’m just noting the move from policeman to paramilitary is fraught with issues including no-knock entry into ‘enemy’ homes. The main problem is the shift in mindset from community member who helps insure peace and tranquility into a constant war footing with all potential adversaries in that community.

Bamford’s The Puzzle Palace, pub 1982, detailed the extensive surveillance the NSA (Nat’l Security Agency) was doing on all American citizens. It’s what Snowden revealed almost 30 years later. That level of unwanted surveillance on its own citizens indicated a trajectory towards fascism. Ullr Rover detailed other parts to it. We’re almost there.

Not liberty to keep and use profits from illegal activity to promote illegal activity. Crook rights is equally as slippery a slope as government overreach.

Does anybody know what the significance of that scarf is? At least three of those officers have the exact same scarf pattern in two different colors. What’s the symbolism behind it?

The weird thing is I see this being worn by police in almost every single photograph of a SWAT incident throughout the country.

It’s a shemagh, like an oversized bandanna or more like a cowboy bandana/neckercheif. Good to keep warm, protect your neck like a scarf, wear it as a headscarf to obscure your face, you can use it as a makeshift tourniquet or arm-sling. It originates from the middle east, lots of military or outdoors types wear them.

I am curious how people wanting to defund the police would like to see a response to a situation like this? You have a guy in a house randomly shooting at neighbors. Should the neighbor deal with it himself, and start a street battle, or will the Flower police, with care baskets going to come and straighten out this mess?

You do. Realize there are good. And. Bad officers in. Our world, don’t you? Police are people. To. Who have families and. Risk there Lives everyday. Every Situation is diffrent and they don’t know what there dealing with till they get there. I have seen police also abused by people. This is where I say, ” if you. Don’t want. To do the Time, Don’t Do. The. Crime”.. I am. 51 years old and have. Never been in trouble. With. The. Law. I have Never been in Juvenile detention, never been to prison and never been in jail not even for 1 day. Sure I have visited people in jail, but the most I have ever done was get a speeding. Ticket. For rushing my 1 1/2 year old son to the hospital when he had food stuck up his. Nose and couldn’t breathe. I was a young mom back. Then.

After reading the report which didn’t include any discussion of motive but “only the facts, ma’am”, I read the comments, hearing some of today’s arguments as in, “defund the police”, “demilitarize the police”, and the always interesting, “they” are doing this or that to “us”. Gee, if we could just have all the cops be clones of James Arness’s Matt Dillon on TV or Sean Connery’s Irish cop in movie The Untouchables, problem solved! BUT life is real, bullets kill and maim, so men and women charged with our safety and protection need to use the available resources. Glad we didn’t have to read about any Hollywood-style shootout at the end! Well done people…

It’s a slippery slope and not so easy to see the gray areas. Maybe they need to mount a .50 on that Bearcat to insure their saftey… or, heck, why not an M1 Abrahams backed up with an A10… that would keep them safe.

Nor would I.

“Peace through superior firepower,” has merit… except when that firepower is turned against ‘us’. It’s a slow and steady creep.

Crooks and cops have been in an arms race since the days of Bonnie and Clyde. Why should we let the crooks have the upper hand?

Omg, THATS our SWAT team!?! They were all probably winded just from getting out of their vehicles. Maybe less doughnuts and more RUNNING! I would be embarrassed to present a SWAT team this out of shape!
