Southern Humboldt Unified Schools to Start August 31 With Full Distance Learning

Southern Humboldt UNified School District Board meeting

Southern Humboldt Unified School District Board meeting

Press release from the Southern Humboldt Unified School District:

Last night, the Southern Humboldt Unified School District Board of Trustees met for almost three hours to hear public comment, discuss, and determine what the District learning plan for the upcoming school year would look like. After much discussion from our very passionate stakeholders, with nearly sixty participants in the virtual board meeting and another fifty watching live on Facebook and through our live-stream, The Board voted, and direction has been provided that we will start the school year on August 31st with a full Distance Learning Model. The Board will meet on October 8, 2020, to re-evaluate and look at the possibility of bringing back small groups of students and returning to face-to-face instruction or whether to continue with the Distance Learning Model. The Board will continue to re-evaluate regularly with the ultimate goal of returning to face-to-face instruction when it is safe to do so.

In the coming weeks, we will be focusing our efforts and professional development on creating the best possible distance learning experience for our students.

The decision was difficult for the Board as they worked to balance student and staff safety with the learning and social-emotional needs of students. Each school will contact staff and families with more information as it is available.

Schools need to have options for parents and children. There is little reason that those not able to handle impersonal learning should be left out. Certainly some small enough stable groups of younger children can be organized with as much safety as anyone can have in a pandemic. Because if the public schools can’t manage it, parents will organize it themselves.

🕯🌳I agree that the emotional and social needs of the students have to be addressed and there a multitude of options. There also is the same needs for the parents. But also the health and safety of the teachers, staff of the schools and what could possibly might happen to family members that they care for. 🖖

i’m going to say this/type this
through my ass, however,
i’ll bet anyone that it could be counted
on one hand with fingers left over, the number of school administrators out of a hundred that have ever taught a class in their life.

The damn cowards babble their gaping jowls through their bunker window slots telling the teachers “Go back in. You’ll be okay.”.

Over paid shit-heads !

I hope the students can return to school quickly.

‘Distance learning’ didn’t amount to much last spring.

Some people have to work. That’s supposedly why we pay taxes to live in a civilized society with roads and schools, that was a lie

Do you have any idea of the percentage of students in SHUSD who have IEPs?

How about the number who are abused at home and value school as a safe place?

How about the number who have parents incapable of helping them (for many different reasons)?

Maybe you don’t know as much as you think you do.

John ,apparently you haven’t sat through a class on zoom. If your internet is slow it makes for a pretty frustrating lecture. Sound is not very good for learning a foreign language either. Peace out John.

Last spring it was “optional” to do on line zoom classroom meetings, and others picked up paper packets to work on from the school. Hopefully the students will be participating. Many of them don’t have internet at home, especially in the East of the Sohum community. It will be a challenge.

Some schools In Humboldt County have insurance that WILL NOT cover students on campus at this time… Even schools “distance learning” but trying to pull in small family groups to tutor for at risk students or offering day programs to help with childcare… insurance says NO!!

Our District should have done a hybrid model. There’s no reason small groups couldn’t have had some classes. The teacher/ administrators committee came up with some very creative and safe options and I applaud them for that. Even the school bus drivers were confident and ready to go, according to the TD. However the board was decided before the meeting even began, we have one board member who claims to have a medical background and said that not one doctor supports kids in school and a bunch of other fear based lies. Another who has been commenting on FB all week about how kids are gonna die and wanted to close person to person for at least 6 months! She’s obviously a very paranoid person not using any actual sense or science. Because there’s no significant numbers of kids dying from covid especially here where kids have been hanging out all summer already! Then we have a guy who actually admitted he was the dumbest guy in the room, and really didn’t think he deserved to making the decision- he was right, he was also worried because of the insurance liability, and you know we already have two litigations against the school already. Last up we have 2 younger board members who actually listened to our governor, and health officer and were willing to give the kids some opportunity of in person education. They realized that 30 percent of kids don’t have internet and won’t get an equal learning experience. Not to mention kids need to see things getting back to normal for there mental health. I’m not sure how they would know that, but possibly because one of them actually has a child in school. And the other is one of most loyal sports and school activity sponsor/donors in our community! These two have my respect. They will keep pushing for our kids to have the best they deserve! We might be able to convince the guy who said he wasn’t intelligent once he sees no one died at Fortuna high. The other 2 will keep voting for virtual learning until we have a vaccine, because they believe everything on the news. Hopefully the new board members coming after Nov. bring some forward thinking and equal opportunity education voices to the board.

You can and should attach names to your observations.

It would help me (and probably many others) understand where the individual board members stand on this issue.

The District website lists the board as: Bushnell, Fenske, Lindsay, Mulder, and O’Sullivan. Is that list even current?

I am glad there is no on campus class. It puts my mind at ease. We will return when it is safer.

My kids fall into an the 30% who do not have internet and last spring it proved that they are not getting equal opportunity for learning. They worked very hard to keep their grades up because they are very active in sports. As soon as grading was internet related their grades failed and we had to shuttle them to summer school which isn’t a learning process it’s a catching up process. I feel the decline in their forward motion is devastating their learning. As a single mom who is an essential worker, I have huge concerns. Who speaks for these30% ???

Call and/or email every school board member along with the superintendent and your principal. Be polite but let them know what you want.

Your kids deserve the best education possible.
