Garberville Rotary: Serve Your Self

This is a press release from Garberville Rotary:

Andy Barnett puts the last letter on a rebuilt Garberville sign. The upgrade was one of many Rotary projects in Southern Humboldt.

The Rotary motto is “Service Above Self.” What does it mean to serve? Modern health science is revealing that willingly giving of yourself to others actually makes YOU healthier. So service to others is in a very sweet way a self-improvement program as well. Double returns!

The Garberville Rotary has no shortage of great servers. Dennis Bourassa is a example. He just loves building things and making his projects meet the highest standards. The mark of his handiwork in the SoHum community is long lasting, from many improvements at the Community Park and Redway School, to the Garberville entry sign at the south entrance to town. Thanks to Dennis and our 2020 President Alex Hulbert, for the new ping pong table at the Town Square! Game on.

Dennis is not alone in his dedication. The joy and personal reward of giving compels Rotarians to serve. We all know how great it feels to help others in time of need. The exceptional thing about Rotary is that these bonds extend around the world to millions of club members, and through history for over a hundred years. There’s joy here that transcends the trivial.

The Garberville Rotary meets on Zoom every Tuesday at noon. To be invited contact Carl Alex at [email protected] Be our guest for caring fellowship, opportunities for service, and great programs on a wide range of topics.

I worked on the crew that placed the log there back in the early 70’s. The log was donated by Wes Marshall. Sterling knapp from Southern Humboldt Building Supply constructed the entire display. The log was much larger at the time and it still had the bark left on it. We anticipated the bark becoming loose, so we nailed it on with twenty-penny nails. It took us most of the day and used most of a box of nails. We didn’t have a nail gun. The bark eventually fell of anyway because the cambium layer rotted.

I also worked on cleaning the rotten cambium layer off the log. The original sign bracket was made with cinder blocks from Lake County. The Blocks were later covered with rock because the looked “too 70’s”. Brian Walker, also a Rotarian, did the outstanding rock work on the sign bracket. The “Garberville” wording was originally on the front of the log. Brian Walker mover it to the top. The original sign was made by Roger Clark.

The large beam across the top of the local club signs was made in a local saw mill by Dave Genaro, who now works at Branscomb Center / U.S. Cellular in Garberville, he frequently reminds me of that. The landscaping of the entire entrance was also a Rotary project. With a few more Rotarians, they could refresh it.

Hi Ernie, you forgot to mention it was the wood shop students @ South Fork who routed out the letters to that sign your talking about in the early 70’s, we were all assigned a letter to route, mine was the “V”, go figure. Thanks Ernie…

Thank you Ed. I missed a whole bunch of people that worked on the sign.

If there is anybody else out there, please chime in!
