Press release from the Humboldt County Sheriff’s Office:

On July 9, 2020, at about 6 p.m., the Humboldt County Sheriff’s Office Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) Team was dispatched to assist the Eureka Police Department with a suspicious object investigation.

According to the Eureka Police Department, just after 5 p.m. EPD officers responded to the corner of Fairfield and West Hawthorne Streets in Eureka for the report of a suspicious male attempting to ignite a possible “bottle rocket”. The male fled the scene prior to law enforcement arrival.

While on scene, EPD officers located a suspicious device and requested the assistance of the Sheriff’s EOD team. EOD deputies responded and utilizing an EOD robot, rendered the device safe.

The male suspect associated with the device is unknown and outstanding at this time. The only description information available for the suspect is that he is a white male adult possibly in his 30’s.

Anyone with information about this investigation should contact the Eureka Police Department at 707-441-4060 or the Humboldt County Sheriff’s Office at 707-441-5000.

The Humboldt County Sheriff’s Office would like to remind the public that if you see something suspicious or out of place in your neighborhood, do not touch or move it, but contact your local law enforcement.
