Exhibitions on View for the Reopening of the Morris Graves Museum of Art

This is a press release from the Humboldt Arts Council:

Museum Hours:  Wednesday – Sunday 12 p.m. – 5 p.m.

Elijah Howe: A Voyage Home

July 8 through September 27

As a graduate of HSU, Elijah Howe combines the fragmentation of images seen in David Hockney’s photographic work and imbues it with the photo-diary narrative structure of JH Engstrom’s projects. “My work explores place by combining individual details to construct a whole scene. The recurring themes that are present in this work are isolation and fragmentation. I am interested in the way that a photograph captures an instant in time and reveals small details of the surrounding world. This project takes many different images of one scene. Each frame exists as its own unique picture and only when combined, will they tell the whole story.” In 2019 Howe received the Tom Knight Award for Photography and this exhibition is appropriately installed in the Tom Knight Gallery at the MGMA.

Artnauts: Globalocation II

July 8 through August 23

Artnauts: Globalocation II gives insight into the 24-year history of the collective. The mission of the Artnauts is to use the visual arts to help address global issues while connecting with artists and communities from around the world. The name derives from combining the words “art” and “astronaut” as a way to describe the process of exploring uncharted territory in the world at large. The name also denotes a practice that is “not” art as usual, and goes beyond the confines of the traditional or conventional art world, blurring the boundaries between art, activism, and social practice. With over 300 members from 13 American States and 9 countries, the Artnauts have worked at the intersection of critical consciousness and contemporary artistic practice to impact change through over 240 exhibitions on 5 continents to date. Globalocation II, is a selection of works from the Artnauts’ archive. In all of their shows they address themes that are relevant to the local community of people in specific areas of the world that is some way to connect us to each other.
