Two Chesapeake Bay Retrievers Found Near Freshwater Lagoon

Two Chesapeake Bay RetrieversTwo Chesapeake Bay Retrievers were found near Freshwater Lagoon on May 31.

The folks at the Humboldt County Animal Shelter figure these two dogs are probably missed. “[I]t is hoped that their people will see where they are before their legal hold is up and/or they are moved on legally to someone else because no one showed in the legal hold period,” we were told.

And they asked us to help. So we’re asking you. The Animal Shelter folk say,

The Chessies look like they may have been out there walking for some distance:
The big headed boy is said to have rear end pain as he got vocal when touched in that area.  The second Chessie was limping – some of his pads are raw.
The shelter staff thinks [the two are] about 8 years old.
For the injuries the Shelter has intake funds and then can tap into the Emergency Medical Fund and so they will get the vet care needed.

For more information about this animal, call:
Humboldt County Sheriff’s Animal Shelter at (707) 840-9132

I hope people are checking to make sure the owner’s weren’t in an accident and over the cliff and pups were tossed from the vehicle. Lots of places that could happen along that route.

I agree, those dogs look as if they were dumped (which is out of season) or their owners are in trouble. they are very smart.

Poor doggies. You would think that someone would be looking for them.

I sure hope that if these two, and the Lost Logger of yesterday’s post can be kept together if they are adopted — it would be very hard on animals that have been together for 8 or 9 years to be separated. I sure hope their owner is looking. Or, that someone good is eyeing the family of three for adoption. We would, but already have 2….

Please keep them together if they need to be adopted out.

Bless you! My thought as well. It will be alot easier on these babies mentally and emotionally to stay together. I just hope in my heart, no one intentionally “dropped” them.

The pup on the left looks haunted. How were they acting when picked up? Once fed and rested someone should bring them back to where they were found. They might just lead the people back to where their person{s} are. These dogs are retrievers after all! and they look distraught. I have had a lot of experience with dogs for 40 years i recognize the “lassie rescue asking help “look. Had several experiences with my dogs and neighbors dogs signaling/asking for help and to follow them towards animals/humans in distress. learn the signs good luck and godspeed.

I’ve been raising and breeding Chesapeake bay retrievers for over forty years and hunted the big lagoon in that area. If the owner is not found contact CBR rescue in Northern California that way the dogs will go to chessie people. Here is the link

They look like they could be Chessadors (Lab & Chessy). Please let us know when or if the owners are found. TY.

I hope they find their family before our cruel Sheriffs department kills them even when there is plenty of room at the pound.

What on earth makes you think they’d do that? The shelter ASKED for help finding the owners or a good home. There is a good amount of room at the pound, and these appear to be purebred dogs, which lots of people want. There’s no mention of them being aggressive, either.

Be sure to keep them together if owner(s) cannot be located. A man share a rescue group link for Chesapeake Retrievers:

Big red flag there is no 8 year old Chesapeakes that are going to get lost and no one is going to drop them off there’s a million people that would take those dogs but their owners need them definitely a problem somewhere I would challenge anyone who thinks they know more about these dogs. this is my business. There’s something wrong with these dogs being on their own they cannot get lost

If they are not fixed. I would think a Breeder would be a possible owner. There was a Chessador Breeder in Fortuna area.

Greg, I think you are right.

They can navigate by smell, even in places they’ve never been before.

If these boys people do not come forward, they have been accepted into CBRR and American Chessie Club Rescue is following them as well. Chessie are lucky to have great rescues looking after them! (As the person who set up the rescue program at the Shelter when it was started, I was also a volunteer with CBRR and even though no longer doing front line resuce or volunteering with CBRR, I do step up when Chessies hit the Shelter and was the one that contacted CBRR who responded immediately that they would take these boys if their people were not found ).

Because how hard Chessies bond with their people we wanted to do all we can to try and find their people.

We have posted these dogs far and wide – even old school posters around where they were found.

These two dogs are solid delightful boys that have been loved and cared for. They may be younger than aged by the Shelter, and one seems younger than the other. Both are doing well in the Shelter (sometimes Shelters are hard places for Chessies to be). Both are no longer limping and enjoy being petted, retrieving and sniffing around the play pen with kennel staff.

Thank you all for your care and concern for these boys!

I don’t mean to sound stupid what state is this in? I’m willing to foster to adopt if parents are not found.

I grew up my whole childhood having Chesapeake’s and never once had an incident of them running off they never wondered far from our house and very loyal sweet amazing dogs! Something rather odd must have happened for them to be left off by there own somewhere they aren’t runners and you almost never here of Chesapeake’s being picked up or lost Very strange! If the owners are not found I hope someone adopts them they will not be disappointed!🙏

These two boys are exiting the Shelter to local foster homes until they fly to rescue! Thank you everyone for passing the word about these two.
