Fourth COVID-Related Death, One New Case Reported Today

Press release from Humboldt County COVID19 – Joint Information Center:

Public Health Lab reportA fourth Humboldt County resident has died after being diagnosed with COVID-19. One additional case was confirmed today, bringing to 103 the total number of county residents who have tested positive for the virus.

The individual who died was an elderly resident of Alder Bay Assisted Living and was diagnosed with COVID-19 early in the facility’s outbreak. Humboldt County Health Officer Dr. Teresa Frankovich said, “We send our condolences for this loss to family, friends and caregivers.”

Another round of testing was completed today at the facility, and there are no new positive cases in staff or residents. Ten days have passed since the last new positive case at Alder Bay.

More than 700 individuals in our county reside in licensed skilled nursing or assisted living facilities. “These people, who are our friends, neighbors and loved ones, are among the most vulnerable to serious COVID-19 infections, and it is critically important that we protect them with all of the tools at our disposal,” Dr. Frankovich said. “Public Health and the Congregate Living Facilities Task Force in the Emergency Operations Center have been working to assist these facilities in preparedness and surveillance efforts and continue to do so.”

Dr. Frankovich went on to urge everyone in the community to do their part to limit spread of this virus. “All of us can also help by doing our best to prevent rapid spread of infection across the community as it increases the likelihood of asymptomatic workers bringing virus into a facility,” she said. “Facial coverings, social distancing and other efforts can truly make a difference.”

In an effort to become more precise with data reporting, some changes have to be made to daily lab result numbers. Over time, information from commercial laboratories and other sources has become increasingly unreliable as more testing devices and methodologies have come online. Going forward, the Joint Information Center will report only data from the Humboldt County Public Health Laboratory and the OptumServe public test site in Eureka. This represents the vast majority of tests conducted in Humboldt County at this time.

The total number of tests run has been inaccurate on the humboldtgov.org homepage and HumCoCOVID social media pages since Saturday, due to inconsistent reporting practices and delayed information from testing sources other than the Humboldt County Public Health Laboratory.

The number of tests run to date by the Humboldt County Public Health Laboratory is 3,163, and the number of tests run to date by the OptumServe public test site is 2,608 for a total of 5,771. The dashboard on the Humboldt County homepage and social media graphics will reflect the change in reporting starting today. We apologize for the error.

For the most recent information about COVID-19, visit CDC.gov or CDPH.ca.gov. For local information, visit humboldtgov.org, call 707-441-5000 or email [email protected].

What do these numbers mean?

  • New confirmed cases of COVID-19—the number of test-confirmed positive cases since the previous report.
  • Total confirmed cases—the number of test-confirmed positive cases since the pandemic began, including people who have recovered from the illness.
  • Total recovered—the number of confirmed cases who are no longer in isolation, meaning they have met Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) criteria for release, including absence of fever for at least three days without use of fever-reducing medicine, improvement in symptoms and have had 10 days or more since onset of symptoms.
  • Total deaths—the number of people who have died after being diagnosed with COVID-19.
  • Total hospitalizations—total number of people with confirmed cases of COVID who have been hospitalized since the pandemic began, including people who have been released.
  • Number of tests run since last report—number of tests run since the most recent reporting period.
    • Public Health Laboratory— number of tests performed at the Humboldt County Public Health Laboratory since the most recent reporting period.
    • OptumServe—number of tests performed at the OptumServe testing site in Eureka since the most recent reporting period.
  • Total tests run to date—total number of tests run to date.
    • Public Health Laboratory—total number of tests performed to date at the Humboldt County Public Health Laboratory.
    • OptumServe—total number of tests performed to date at the OptumServe test site in Eureka.
  • Public Health Laboratory test capacity—the approximate number of testing kits that are complete and ready to be administered. This number is decreased by testing and increased as additional supplies are acquired.
  • Public Health Laboratory turnaround time—the estimated amount of time it takes per testing run. Each run can include up to 20 samples; multiple batches can be run each day.
  • Transmission data
    • travel-acquired—nationally, internationally or regionally

    • community transmission—spread without travel or known contact to any other confirmed case
    • under investigation—confirmed case whose means of transmission has not yet been determined.
  • Regional data—the number of confirmed cases of COVID-19 per region. The three reporting regions of Humboldt County are:
    • Northern Humboldt— extends south from Humboldt’s County’s border with Del Norte County (North) to Highway 299 (South).
    • Greater Humboldt Bay Area—extends south from Highway 299 (North) to Highway 36 (South).
    • Southern Humboldt—extends south from Highway 36 (North) to Humboldt County’s southern border with Mendocino County.
  • Gender—the gender of individuals who have tested positive for COVID-19. Total cases, shown by percentage.

Notes on patient and demographic data

To protect the identity of people with COVID-19, their specific location of residence will not be disclosed. The Humboldt County Public Health Branch is legally responsible for protecting personal health information, including residence address, specific age, recent travel, the identities and locations of any contacts, the provider of medical treatment, the course of illness and any other information that might identify an individual with or exposed to the virus unless it serves the interests of public health to do so.

Although we understand it is of interest to residents, providing location and other demographic information to the general public does nothing to slow the spread of illness. Humboldt County is experiencing untraceable person-to-person transmission, also known as “community spread,” and there is no place that can be considered safe. To reduce your chances of acquiring or spreading COVID-19, avoid travel, wash your hands, keep yourself and your environment clean, follow the shelter-in-place order, and do not leave home for any reason unless it is absolutely necessary to do so.

The following case information is provided daily Monday through Saturday:

  • New confirmed cases
  • Total confirmed cases to date

Let’s make a reasonable observation. If these protests around the country and Europe don’t result in a serious spike of deaths and severe sickness over the next week, then not only were we lied to, but all the destruction of small businesses was based on lies, medical martial law was based on lies, virtue signaling non mask wearers was based on lies, social distance was based on lies. The new numbers the CDC put out speak to this. The study usc put out supports this.

Now remember we were told that 2 weeks was the self isolation time required for this “deadly pandemic” and it’s been a week of protests now. Also Europe was supposed to be worse off and now they have been protesting blm for days now too. So the clock is ticking.

Covid 19…84 has shown that members of this culture are willing and able to “doublethink” about numbers used to scare us being changed while still simultaneously believing there’s reason to fear.

Why do you all resist the facts that the media and government lied to you? What comfort does
It give you to know you are enacting a system that in all its technoglory will enslave your children and grandchildren? Why not stop and think?
You don’t have to agree…but where are these new cases? They should already be occuring….. Don’t be afraid to admit you’ve been duped. We all have time and again

apologies for the multiple comments. didnt think it was working so i tried rewording it tio test what is acceptable. i like and respect what yall do here, and i know its done from the heart, we can agree to disagree and that is what freedom is all about. however i cant erase the copies now. also, in the same vein of that editorial we saw a few weeks back i want to reiterate that i do not reject the scamdemic for lack of care about my neighbor, on the contrary i feel i care about mine and my neighbors liberty now and for generations to come, and i am speaking in defense of that.
much love all. lets not forget to love and respect our individual rights

As to numbers, when something is new and not much is known about it, predictions are going to repeatedly change as the situation evolves and we learn more about it. The models that predicted a large number of deaths early on were based on the transmission rate if everyone had carried on as normal, while instead social distancing has been quite effective at slowing transmission, rendering the models not wrong, but outdated. For the total number of deaths, we’re sadly still on target unless we maintain social distancing until a vaccine or other treatment is created. Local antibody testing found about 1% of people have antibodies ( https://www.times-standard.com/2020/06/02/1-of-early-humboldt-county-coronavirus-tests-show-antibodies/ ; it may be on here too, but I’m not finding it right now), indicating they have already been infected. So far we have 4 deaths. If we end up with 100% of people eventually getting infected, that’s 400 deaths. This is in line with early predictions.

As to the protests, we probably will see a small spike in cases. However, from the photos I’ve seen, a surprisingly high percentage of protesters were wearing masks, it was entirely outdoors often in breezy weather, in some cases 6ft distancing was being observed, and the protesters as a group were leaning towards the demographic more likely to only have no or mild symptoms, and thus not get tested, so the numbers will likely be much lower than if, say, the same number of people went to work in an office building with no masks. The lower transmission rate of outdoor, masked activities is why outdoor recreation is still being encouraged rather than banned.

The only lying I’ve seen from the government has been in the “it’ll just go away” and “it’s just a hoax” direction, as neither of those seems to be true, since it hasn’t gone away, and over a hundred thousand people are dead. And if you want to apply the efforts of minitrue to current politics, look at how often Trump has claimed that not only is something false actually true, but it has always been true, at no point did anyone ever say it wasn’t true, and any recordings of people such as himself saying it isn’t true are obviously fakes by unspecified enemies. Or, often the opposite – that something that is obviously truth based on prima facie evidence is actually false, has always been false, and anyone saying it is true is obviously an enemy trying to harm him. Or switching between the two as often as polls come in.

dont foget #filmyourhospital
all the healthcare workers furloughed and laid off
the fact that this is an international world with a virus since november?
normal treatments and therapies/surgeries cancelled or postponed leaving countless patients with reduced care or to die (and its about caring about health?!)
soeaking of health hows that starvation/unemplyment and civil unrest coming along for the poorest of the people??
the states and countries that never shut down?
the fact that we supposedly dont understand how it really behaves since that narrative has changed. remember plastic surfaces, sun, air, water droplets?
and where is the science about water droplets in relation to spreading of viruses?
whole lotta questionable stuff about all of it is the point.

It’s short attention span theater. You’re absolutely right. If lots of people don’t start getting sick and dying soon, right here in Humboldt County California, then WTF, mate? It’s as obvious as it can be, but it doesn’t matter, and it never will. You and I will never change any adult’s mind about it. Nothing mainstream is spontaneous.

People are breaking social distancing by the tens of thousands. IF what you’ve been spouting about for months now is true. Then over the next several days we should be seeing massive spikes in patients and deaths. IF it’s not true then we won’t.the proof is in the pudding.

Whatever it is…… the joke is on us. Im having second doubts myself about getting sucked into this division, hate and racism. I have had to take a step back today and realize that I am part of the problem just because of my comments and words. My apologies to Ms Kemp and anyone else who have been Irritated or annoyed by my sarcastic smart ass remarks. Not my intention. My intention is that we all see that the people of this nation are under attack. Black, white, middle class or poor. We are the ones that are paying the price. We, the 99% are now the enemy. I will try my best not to Seduce myself any further into believing that we the people are the enemy. We are ALL angry and at our wits ends, we should be,if you are not, your not paying attention.Hopefully we will all agree that if we are not careful with our actions words and behavior that we will all succumb to the unfortunate future that lays ahead of us. Good night.

The costs of being an RN in a convid-19 wing. “June 3 (Reuters) – More than 600 nurses worldwide are known to have died from COVID-19, which has infected an estimated 450,000 healthcare workers, the International Council of Nurses said on Wednesday.” And when a nurse dies from the virus is there any Governmental concerns about protecting the RN’s. Not with this administration. They are seen as collateral damage. Where have I heard that term before. Oh yes, it the term the military uses to define innocent civilians killed by friendly fire. That tells you how valuable you were to your Government. And now we have fewer RNs. This country has a way for putting select groups of unprotected Americans in harm’s way.
