Betty Kwan Chinn Homeless Foundation Receives $200k Grant for Pet Assistance Program

This is a press release from the Betty Kwan Chinn Homeless Foundation:

The Betty Kwan Chinn Homeless Foundation is pleased to announce it has been awarded a $200,000 grant from the California Department of Housing and Community Development, Pet Assistance and Support Program. This was a competitive grant, with $5 million allocated for the State of California to provide funds for homeless shelters to provide shelter, food and basic veterinary services for pets owned by individuals experiencing homelessness, including staff and insurance related to providing those services. The Betty Kwan Chinn Homeless Foundation was awarded the maximum amount available to a single entity.

Betty has long recognized the importance that some homeless individuals attach to their companion animals. Dogs provide emotional support, companionship, warmth and security to people living in the street. However, they also present a significant barrier to services because many shelters do not allow dogs, and this prevents some of the chronically homeless from accessing case management services geared toward regaining their self-sufficiency. Betty operates one of the few shelters on the west coast that allows pets. Betty and her staff are grateful for this opportunity to be able to shelter, feed and provide medical services, including preventative health care such as vaccinations, which in turn protects other animals as well. Betty and her staff are grateful for the legislators who supported the budget bill containing funds for this important purpose.

Transient pet assistance!?!? This is progressiveness people, this is priority. Can we get some funding for junkie dogs to get covid masks? You know, to protect there owners.

Pets are sometimes more deserving of assistance than people. I’m a dog person although I love all animals. 🐕

Agree 100%. People suck. If the 200k was spent to find street dogs a better home , I would support it all the way. I have seen with my own eyes a street bum who said he wanted money for his dog, so I went and bought a couple cans of dogfood for the dog. I watched the bum crack the can and start eating the alpo! No joke!

You are either the best Jonathan Swift of our time or you inadvertently show truths about our world through some amazing combination of wordluck. Or possibly your wife hijacks your comments sometimes.

My wife hates my comments and thinks I’m a troll. (She is also a Bernie fan though)

It’s been studied & proven that pets are often the life-saving factor for people with physical, mental, social disabilities. The Native Americans called dogs, the Dog People, not animals. Ms.Chinn obviously understands this reality. Congratulations to her! A designated camp, with simple bathing & cooking facilities is the only sane solution to homelessness. There are also many empty warehouse bldgs that could serve as indoor campgrounds. Any solution is less expensive than no solution.
